Without question, the most stressful years for parents are when their children are between 13 and 20. With young children, control seems to be quite easy. If a child doesn’t do what he is told to do, he is just made to do it. If a child is leaving the house and doesn’t listen when the parent calls him back, the parent simply goes after the child picks him up and brings him back. But as the child grows older and bigger, parents can’t do that any more. They can’t just pick the child up and bring him back. With older children, control is best achieved when the parents do those things the children want. In this way, the things do the controlling for you. For example, parents may think it is necessary for the child to clean his own room, but the child may think it’s no use and refuses to clean his room. It is important for parents to understand how their use of control must change as their children grow older.

Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.
This is an old English saying. Do you know it before? It says that we must go to bed early and get up early in the morning. Then we should be healthy. We should also be rich (wealthy) and clever (wise).

This is a true story in Guyana. One day, a child took some silver paper from a cigarette box. He rolled it into a tiny ball and pushed it up his nose. He couldn’t get it out again. He ran crying to his mother. His mother couldn’t get the paper out, either. A week later the paper was still in his nose. His nose began to have a bad smell.
So his mother took his child to the hospital. The doctor looked up his nose. She put a tiny steel rod(鋼棒) into his nose and felt the paper. She said she would have to cut his nose to get the paper out.
The child’s mother came home looking sad. She didn’t want her child to have his nose cut. He was a handsome boy and the cut would make him ugly.
Next day, the child’s mother took him to her friend Sidney. Sidney lived in a house with an old woman called May. She asked to see the child, so the child let her look up his nose. He closed his eyes.
“Yes, I can see it,” May said. “It will be out soon!”
As she spoke, she shook black pepper on the child’s nose. He gave a mighty sneeze and the paper flew out. His mother was surprised. May told her to take the boy to the sea for a swim. She said the salt water would go up his nose and stop the bad smell.
So the child didn’t have to go to the hospital and gave his nose cut.

One of sweetest memories as a child is of going down to the river and sitting comfortably on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream and listen to songs of birds. I would also watch the bamboo trees bend under the pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their original state after the wind had died down.
When I think about the bamboo tree’s ability to bend and move back, the word “resilience” comes to my mind. When it is used for a person, this word means the ability to readily recover(恢復(fù)) from shock, sadness or any other suffering. Have you ever felt like you were going to snap? Have you ever felt like you were at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived to talk about it.
Life is a mixture(混合) of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, bend, but don’t break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.
An amount of hope will take you through the unpleasant suffering. With hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem. The unpleasant suffering may be easier to deal with if the end result is worth having.
If things get tough and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo trees, bend, but don’t break!
1.What does the word “snap” in the second paragraph most probably mean?
A. break B. change
C. win D. Complain
2.What can help people get through sufferings according to the writer?
A. Holding peace and quiet in mind. B. Waiting until sufferings disappear.
C. Experiencing more bad times. D. Hoping for a better tomorrow.
3.What would be the best title of this passage?
A. Memories of Bamboo B. Be Like Bamboo
C. Enjoying Bamboo D. Characteristics of Bamboo
