Psychologists(心理學家) are interested in the reasons why some people like taking part in risky sports.

When they studied people who were learning to jump from a plane with a parachute, they found that the parachutists’ bodies produced large amounts of two hormones(激素), adrenaline(腎上腺素) and noradrenaline(去甲腎上腺素), just before they made their jump. These hormones help to prepare us for any sudden activity. Adrenaline increases the heart beat and provides more sugar for the muscles(肌肉), while noradrenaline makes us react(反應) more quickly. However, noradrenaline also supplies energy to a part of the brain which controls feelings of pleasure. A feeling of pleasure caused by this hormone makes certain people want to take part in dangerous sports.

Another possible reason is the level of excitement in part of the brain. According to some psychologists, the brain tries to manage a certain level of excitement. They believe that people who have a low level of excitement look for new experiences in order to fire themselves with excitement, but people who usually have a high level of excitement try to avoid risks in order not to become overexcited. If the psychologists are right, people with a low excitement level are the ones who enjoy taking part in dangerous sports and activities.

It is thought that people with low levels of excitement have a slower-reacting nervous system than people with higher levels. So it may be possible to find out your level of excitement by testing your nervous system. A quick way of doing this is to put some lemon juice on your tongue(舌頭). If you produce a lot of saliva(唾液), your nervous system has been affected(影響) by the lemon and so you probably have a high level of excitement; if you produce little saliva, you probably have a low excitement level. If you have a low level, you might enjoy taking part in risky sports. However, this does not mean that you have to try parachuting!

1.Did the parachutists’ bodies produce large amounts of adrenaline and noradrenaline before they made their jump?

2.What does adrenaline increase and provide?

3.Why do people with a high level of excitement try to avoid risks?

Can we give a hand to those endangered animals? Yes, we may only do a little bit, but together our small actions add up to a lot.

1 Protect wildlife habitat (棲息地).

Perhaps the greatest threat that faces many species (物種) is the widespread destruction (破壞) of habitat. Cutting down forests, farming, and development all result in loss of wildlife habitat. In areas where rare (稀有的) species live, habitat destruction can quickly force a species to extinction (滅絕). By protecting habitat, entire communities of animals can be protected together naturally.

2Reduce the threat (威脅) of invasive (入侵的) species.

The spread of non-native species has greatly reduced native populations around the world. Invasive species compete with native species for resources (資源) and habitat. They can even prey (捕食) on native species directly, forcing native species towards extinction.

3 Place decals (貼花紙) on windows.

It is reported that as many as one billion birds in the United States die each year because of collisions (碰撞) with windows. You can help reduce the number of collisions simply by placing decals on the windows in your home and office.

4 Slow down when driving.

Many native animals have to live in developed areas and this means they must move in human-living areas. One of the biggest obstacles (障礙) to them is that created by roads. Roads divide habitat and present a constant (不斷的) risk to any animal attempting to cross from one side to the other. So when you’re out and about, slow down and keep an eye out for wildlife.

1.Is the greatest threat that endangered animals faces created by roads?

2.How many ways to protect the endangered animals is mentioned in the passage?

閱讀下面的短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問題。

Apps are taking the place of teachers as technology plays a bigger role in language education.

Ma Ruining has been studying English for a long time, but her teachers are not in the classroom — they’re in the palms(手掌) of her hands. Ma has several English learning apps. They are often for users who want to improve their English, from listening to speaking.

Although she’s tired from eight hours’ office work, she does not spend her free time just relaxing by watching TV dramas as she did before.

She takes out her mobile phone and begins to practice her spoken English with an app called Liulishuo (“speaking fluently” in English), which offers ways to people looking to improve their spoken English.

A 10-second audio clip(音頻) by native speakers is then played on the app as Ma starts her lesson. After that, the app asks her to imitate(模仿) the piece. The app then scores her performance on a scale (數(shù)值范圍) from 1 to 100 and gives advice on how to make improvements.

“If you score more than 90, it means your pronunciation is good,” says Ma, who has been practicing English every day on the phone for the past six months.

“At first, I usually only get a score of 70 as I often mispronounce,” adds Ma, 26. “I graduated two years ago, but I wanted to improve my spoken English to study or travel abroad some day in the future.”

English learning apps make it convenient for people to study English. So what English learning apps are you using now?

1.According to the passage, who often uses English learning apps?

2.How did Ma Ruining spend her free time relaxing?

3.Will the app called Liulishuo provide users with suggestions?

4.How often does Ma practice English on the phone?

5.Why did Ma want to improve her spoken English?
