As one of "China's new four great inventions",China's high-speed rail eyes the world again with Fuxing. It is proud of a top speed of 400 km/h and a continuous speed of 350 km/h. It is totally designed and produced by Chinese engineers without any help from the West.

Its air conditioning system is designed to reduce the influence of the external pressure(外部壓力)wave when the train is passing through tunnels, easing(緩解)discomfort of ears.

There are two ways of driving in the world: if the driver's seat is on the left and cars travel on the right side of the road, it is called "left-hand driving", as it is in China, while the other way of driving is called "right-hand driving", as it is in Britain. Nowadays, around 65% of the world's population drives on the right of the road, while the rest is used to driving on the left.
Though no one knows the exact reasons, it seems likely that people in ancient times travelled on the left of the road. Roman coins show pictures of horsemen passing on each other's right. And right-hand people generally got on a horse from the animal's left. Obviously, it's safer to do this at the left side of the road, and it makes sense(行得通)for the horse to be ridden on the left.
A change happened in the late 1700s. When Napoleon(拿破侖)conquered(攻占)nations, he forced them to travel on the right side of the road, which spread left-hand driving throughout Europe. However, Britain still stuck with the right-hand driving rule and countries which were part of the British Empire were made to follow. This is why India, Australia and the former British colonies(前英國殖民地)in Africa continue to drive on the left. One exception(例外)is Egypt, as that country was defeated(打敗)by Napoleon before becoming part of the British Empire.
Some countries changed sides until modern times. Sweden only moved to driving on the right in 1967 and Iceland changed the following year. Ghana changed sides in 1974. On September 7, 2009, Samoa became the third country ever to change from left-to-right-hand driving for the reason that it made it easier to import(進(jìn)口) cheap cars from right-hand driving Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
So if you want to travel to another country or go on business, make sure you know whether it is left-or right-hand driving to avoid unnecessary troubles.
1.Which picture shows the correct driving in Britain?
A. B. C. D.
2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Sweden changed to drive on the right in 1974.
B. People drive on the left side of the road in Egypt.
C. People have known the exact reasons for driving on the left.
D. Napoleon helped with the spread of left-hand driving.
3.What is the writer's purpose for writing this passage?
A. To explain the advantages of the two ways of driving.
B. To introduce the development of the two ways of driving.
C. To complain about the change of the two ways of driving.
D. To compare the differences of the two ways of driving.

The label(標(biāo)簽), Made in China, is one that is becoming increasing common in shopping centers all over the world.
In the United States, shoppers at Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest retailer(零售商), have a wide selection of products mostly produced in China. The large amount of Chinese imports have created a large selection of goods in other countries as people begin to buy more and more products made in China. These goods are even widely available in other Asian nations, where Chinese-made goods are quite popular. Chinese brand names are also becoming more well-known outside China.
When Chinese Americans visit family and friends in their homeland, gifts from the U.S. are a must. But TVs and fashionable clothes aren't rare any more, and anything 'Made in China' shouldn’t be considered in any case.
"When I decide to visit my family members in China, I will have a big headache. What should I buy for them? They may not all speak English, but everyone in China knows those three words," a Chinese American said. "When they see the label 'Made in China,' they will think, 'Why do you send me this?' "
The development of China has surprised the world with its growth. As a result, the other countries are beginning to try to reduce Chinese goods with the use of taxes(稅)and import restrictions. However, the development on the Chinese economy still affects the world in many ways.

A. 品牌 B. 明星 C. 生產(chǎn)地 D. 樹枝

A. Because their Chinese friends cannot speak English.
B. Because their friends will be unhappy if the gifts are made in China.
C. Because they should give their friends rare gifts.
D. Because they should give their friends fashionable gifts.
3.How do other countries try to reduce the Chinese goods in their own countries?
A. By developing the qualities of their own products.
B. By telling their shoppers not to buy Chinese goods.
C. By importing more Chinese goods.
D. By using taxes and import restrictions.

During the last week of my sophomore year(大學(xué)二年級), Mom called me, hoping my summer break would be spent with grandma and grandpa. My grandparents were both in their seventies, and I knew they really needed the help around the farm.
So I packed my car after the final exam and started my life on the farm. As weeks passed, I gradually settled into a routine of daily work with Grandpa. In the evenings I usually read or talked with Grandma.
On the last Saturday in June, I went fishing with my grandfather. Unexpectedly, we saw one of the swans was dead by the pond. Grandpa had given the pair of swans to Grandma on their fiftieth anniversary. "Why don't we buy another one?" I suggested. Grandpa thought for a few moments and finally said, "no... it's not that easy, Bruce. You see, swans mate for life. There's nothing we can do for the one that's left. He has to work it out for himself." A few days later, we drove by the pond and found the other swan lying near the same place we had found the first one. It, too, was dead.
Then July 12 came. Grandma died suddenly that morning of a stroke( 中 風(fēng) ). My grandfather was obviously shaken when he heard the news.
The funeral was held the next day. On the second day after the funeral, Grandpa asked all the people to get back to their own lives. Grandpa was not a man who could outwardly express his grief around others, and we all worried about him.During the rest of the summer, we stayed busy working. I thought there was something different about Grandpa but couldn't tell exactly what it was.
September was nearing, I had to leave. As I drove down the driveway, he waved to me and then walked to the gate to start the morning livestock check. That's how I like to remember him.
Mom called me at school on a windy October day to tell me Grandpa had died. He died of a stroke, the same as Grandma.

A. Every swan has only one mate in its life.
B. A swan will find another one if its mate dies.
C. Swans are not animals that can live long.
D. All swans die at the same place by the pond.
3.What do you think is the most probable reason for Grandpa’s death?
A. He was sad about the swans’ death.
B. He has been badly ill for a long time.
C. He felt very lonely as all his family members left after the funeral.
D. He missed his wife and couldn’t get through the times after her death.
4.Which is the best title of the passage?
A. My grandparents’ farm B. My holiday life on a farm
C. A love story of the swans D. A love story of my grandparents
