Imagine that your hairstyle is important for your future.  For teenage boys in  Papua  New Guinea this is true! The Hulie people believe that beautiful hair shows a man is healthy and strong.. They respect men who wear wigs, so teenage Hulie boys have to brow great hair. With this hair, they make a wig that they can wear every day.

The Hulie live deep in the rain forest of Papua New Guinea.  Before the 1930s, people from

the outside world didn't even know about them. Today, there are about 70_000 Hulie people,  Most still follow their traditional way of life. The Hulie live in small villages, but families. do not live together. Women and small children live m one house and. men live together in another house.  When boys are eight years old, they have to leave their mothers to live with their fathers.

    Some Hulie children go to school to study reading and math.  But after middle school. While teenage gals babysit their younger brothers and sisters, most teenage boys,to wig school.  At wig school, they learn how to grow their hair and how to make wigs. The rules are pretty serious

  1 .They cannot run, because their hair can be damaged.

  2. They have to stay away from fire.

  3. They have to put water on their hair 12 times a day to make it Brow faster.

When a Hulie teen wears his wig for the first time, he shows he is a man Now , he can get married. To prepare, boys grow their hair for 18 months or loner. Then they cut it and use their own hair to make a mushroom-shaped wig.  Later they grow their hair again for special wigs. These special wigs are for celebrations and festivals. Hulie men wear their mushroom-shaped wigs every day, but they like to be fashionable, too. To add style, they decorate their wigs with flowers and feathers.

Hip hop, or rap music as it's also called, started on the streets and in the clubs of New York City in the 1970s, but today many countries have their own kind of hip hop music, This kind of music has its roots in reggae,disco and funk music. Rapping, which speaking to the rhythm of the music,is an important part of this music. Young people rap to express how they feel about their lives and problems.

Would you like to rap in class? Well actually, hip hop music is being played in more than 10,000 schools in the USA. Why? There is a new school programme called "Flocabulary" where teachers use text books and hip hop CDs to help teach a variety of school subjects.  The lyrics of the songs include information on a subject students are studying, which makes learning easy and  Students and teachers are amazed at the positive effects it has had on exam marks. This is one teacher said: "I've used hip hop songs in class, and I've never seen students have such interests in history!  It's unbelievable  how students  remember what I teach it even encourages us to waste our own songs.

Blake Harrison, a high school student, first thought of the idea of Flocabulary. The word "Flocabulary" comes from the words "flow" and "vocabulary". "Flow" is a rap word for "style" or the way a rapper says the words of a song. How did he get the idea'? Well he realized he could remember the lyrics of a hip hop song very easily.  So, why not make lessons into songs'? Today together with Alex Rappaport, a composer, Blake produces hip hop songs for maths .science and literature,which are now being used in schools with great success.
