I’ll never forget one summer day in 1975. On that day my mother suddenly died because of an unexplained illness at the age of 36. Later that afternoon, a police officer came to my house to ask for my father’s permission(允許)for the hospital to use Mother’s valve(心臟瓣膜). I was greatly surprised. I ran into the house in tears. At 14, I just couldn’t understand why people would take apart(分解)a person I loved. . But my father told him, “Yes.”
“How can you let them do that to her?” I cried at him.
“Linda,” he said quietly, putting his arms around me, “the greatest present you can give is a part of yourself. Your mother and I decided long ago that if we can make a person’s life better after we died, our death will have meaning.’’
The lesson my father taught me that day became one of the most important in my life.
Years passed. I married and had a family of my own. In 1996 my father became seriously ill. With a smile he told me that when he died, he wanted to donate(捐贈(zèng))whatever was in good condition(狀況), especially his eyes.
My father died and we donated his eyes as he had wanted. Three days later, my daughter said, “Mum, I’m so proud of what you did for Grandpa.” At that moment I realized that my father gave much more than his eyes. What he left behind sparkled(閃爍)in my daughter’s eyes-pride.

Cycling isn’t always easy. Busy streets and few bike lanes and parking areas can make it a battle. But not even these difficulties can stop Europeans’ love for cycling. According to Reuters, more bicycles have been sold than cars in 26 of the European Union’s 28 states this year.
In some European countries, people really love bicycles. “People ride to work and take their bikes to the grocery store”, Bill Strickland, editor of Bicycling magazine, told the reporter from Reuters.
So what has led to cycling’s growing popularity in Europe? Cycling is “a safe, clean, healthy, inexpensive way to get around town,” the Daily Star concluded. “It not only reduces traffic problems and pollution, but also contributes to public health.”
Bike-friendly rules have also been made. Dozens of cities have joined a European Union initiative(倡議)to make bicycles a form of city transport, like cars. Quite a few cities such as Stockholm, London, Florence and Munich now offer special bike lanes. Copenhagen takes it a step further by keeping bicycles and cars separated as much as possible. On these routes, traffic lights are designed to the rhythms of bicycles, not cars. For people living far from city centers, getting to work by bicycle alone may take too much time. That’s why many European countries now allow cyclists to bring their bicycles onto subway trains. Europeans are also creative in solving parking problems. Amsterdam has come up with a high-tech solution: you lock your bike to a rack(機(jī)架), which then goes underground. When you want your bike back, it is brought back to the surface.

3. According to the passage, the following cities offer special bike lanes EXCEPT______.

C. Bicycles can be locked to a rack underground.
D. Cycling is a good way to get around town.
5.The writing style of the passage is a(n) _____.

There was once a man called Mr. Flowers, and flowers were his only joy in life. He spent all his free time in one of his four glass-houses and grew flowers of every color, with long and difficult names, for competitions (比賽). He tried to grow a rose of a new color to win the silver cup (銀杯) for the Rose of the Year.
Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses were very near to a middle school. Boys of around thirteen of age were often tempted (引誘) to throw a stone or two at one of Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses. So Mr. Flowers did his best to be in or near his glass-houses at the beginning and end of the school day.
But it was not always possible to be on watch at those times. Mr. Flowers had tried in many ways to protect his glass, but nothing that he had done had been useful. He had been to school to report to the headmaster; but this had not done any good. He ha-d tried to drive away the boy that threw stones into his garden; but the boys could run faster than he could, and they laughed at him from far away. He had even picked up all the stones that he could find around his garden so that the boys would have nothing to throw; but they soon found others.
At last Mr. Flowers had a good idea. He put up a large notice (布告) made of good, strong wood some meters away from the glass-houses. On it he had written the words: DO NOT THROW STONES AT THIS NOTICE. After this, Mr. Flowers had no further trouble; the boys were much more tempted to throw stones at the notice than at the glass-houses.
