 Nowadays, we can calculate time very accurately, but before the invention of the clocks, it was very difficult. One way people used to tell the time was by using sundials (曰暑),but it was impossible to tell the time on cloudy and rainy days or at night.

The first clock was invented inChinaby Su Sung in 1088. The first clock inEnglandwas invented 195 years later.

The first watch was invented inItalyin 1462. Early watches were different from today’s in two ways. First, they only had an hour hand. Second, you could not wear them on your wrist (手腕). You had to keep them in your pocket. So they were called “pocket watches”.

The ilrst wrist watches came fromSwitzerland328 years after the first pocket clocks, but nobody bought them. They haven’t been popular for a hundred years.
