What is life's greatest gift? It is choice. Choice is the ability to choose some actions from a set of things to achieve a goal. 1 The reason is that it turns us from dumb animals into artists. Choice becomes the tool we use to sculpt(雕刻) our life. The tool doesn't come free, however, for the price of choice is responsibility.2 It is enjoyment.

Choice is power. Choice is at the heart of life. It is the creative power of life. Life is always changing and we have to make lots of choices. 3 We often need to check where we are on our journey. We need to ask questions: Am I moving closer to my goals? If not, what action will I take now to make myself realize my goals?

4And our life becomes more convenient or comfortable because of them. For example, you decide which store to shop at and which bus station to go to. But the decisions that we make to sculpt our lives are much more important than deciding where to shop. The more we understand the difference between small and big decisions, the more pleasure we will get.

Life is like a chess game.5 All chess lovers realize that it isn't necessary to win to enjoy the game. Make the best moves you can under the conditions. Then you can enjoy your life.

AWhy is choice so great?

BThe pleasure is in the playing.

CIn fact, we have to make choices every day.

【題目】閱讀下面短文,按要求完成下列各題。

In many British schools, the pupils usually wear their school uniforms to school on weekdays. However, recently the students at LVS Ascot Junior School in England wore something quite different. What they wore was what people wear when they go to bed---pajamas(睡衣). They did this not only for fun, but for a local charity called Christopher’s Smile.

Christopher’s Smile was set up in 2008 by Karen and Kevin Capel whose only son Christopher died of cancer at a young age. Christopher’s Smile aims to raise money to fund development of new drugs to treat childhood cancers. Since then, the charity has raised a lot of money and gotten more and more volunteers.

The students of Grade 6 at LVS Ascot Junior School organized the event Pajama Day to support Christopher’s Smile. “We wanted to raise money for our charity in a way that the whole school could join in it, so each pupil paid 1 pound to wear his or her pajama to school on Pajama Day.” said a young organizer.

Both the students and their teachers took part in the event with great interest. Together they not only raised some money, but also had a good time.

Drawing might help you think

When you're sitting in class, have you ever drawn pictures in the margins of your notebooks?

If so, your teacher might have told you 1(stop). Many people think of doodling(涂鴉) as a distraction(精神渙散) from more important things. But it might be just the opposite.

One study shows that doodling may help you remember things you hear. In 2009 researchers asked two groups of people to listen to a phone message. One group 2 (encourage) to doodle, but the other was not. Neither group knew that it would be asked to remember information from the message. But the group that doodled remembered 29 percent more.

Other people 3 (suggest)other uses for drawing. Jesse Prinz, a professor who studies doodling, says it can help you think creatively. Walking away from a problem to draw

might actually help you solve it. When you come back, you 4 (have)a fresh perspective and figure out an answer more quickly.

Two years ago, an author named Sunni Brown 5 (write)a book on doodling. She argues that doodling is a tool that can help people think. She admits that people see doodling

as doing nothing, but she wants to change that. In fact, she runs a business that helps companies

improve organization and planning through doodling. Brown 6 (believe)doodling is helpful because it incorporates(整合)many ways of learning. You lean in four ways: seeing, hearing, reading or writing, and through movement. The more ways you use, the better you learn.

And when you doodle while you 7 (listen )to a lecture, you use all four.

You might think that being good at 8 ( draw)is important for doodling. But if the point of doodling is to help you think, then it doesn't matter what the picture looks like. Even if you're not an artist, doodling can help you. So next time you need help focusing, pick up a pen and doodle away!

【題目】A bookstore chain “Popular Bookmall” introduced their special style of book distribution (分銷)in Shanghai back in November. This experimental store offers books at very low prices, and there is no staff to require customers to pay before taking books away. Sounds like a book lover’s paradise!

Popular Bookmall had already set up such a shop in Nanjing. The organizers of the Nanjing store report that it was a great success; enough customers voluntarily paid for their books. But most older “honesty stores” in China did not receive enough honest customers. For example, a self-service restaurant opened in Fujian province years ago. It allowed customers to pay whatever they chose, but about one-fifth of customers paid nothing. The organizers of the “honesty stores” say that their goal is to encourage people in China to remember how important honesty is.

Many Chinese are worried about dishonesty in China. Even at Popular Bookmall, not everybody chose to pay for their books. Is it a good way to solve it by law? Maybe not. We should listen to our conscience (良心). This has deep roots in Chinese culture. Confucius (孔夫子) taught Chinese to be conscientious and honest.

But there are also a great rational (理性的) reason for “honesty stores”: the more honest people there are in society, the more reasons we have to trust others. And if people trusted each other, they’d be more willing to share. For example, in a “sharing economy”, we do not have to think about saving or spending money all the time. We should try to help other people. In brief, society is built on trust, not only trade (商業(yè)).
