Alice Munro is the first Canadian citizen to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Munro was born into a farming family in Ontario in 1931. The family was very poor.

Munro did a lot of physical work as a young girl. She started writing stories in her teens and studied journalism and English at the University of Western Ontario.
