In the Charles E.Johnson Elementary School in New York, there is a special radio. It gives people warnings(警報(bào))about bad weather.

One day, there came a sound from the radio. This sound brought the piece of news:a heavy storm was coming. William Tomic, principal(校長(zhǎng))of the school, asked teachers to bring children indoors and put them in a safe place at once.

Minutes later, the storm came. However, because of the warning of the radio and the quick work of the principal, no one was hurt.

“The radio really did work very well. (我們對(duì)它的工作感到很高興),”William Tomic said. “The parents were as well.”

The U.S. government hopes there will be more such success stories. It plans to give this kind of radios to all 97,000 public schools in the country.

Every year, more than 10,000 big thunderstorms, 2,500 floods, 1,000 tornadoes(龍卷風(fēng))and some hurricanes(颶風(fēng))take place in the U.S., so the warning radios are very useful. They not only give people warnings about bad weather, but also give warnings about other dangerous things.

From my father I have learned a lot. And I’m very thankful to him. I remember when I was a child my father always got up very early, quietly putting on his clothes and going off to work. To arrive in time to open his tiny store at 8:30, he needed to leave our apartment at 6:30. after all, he had to take a bus and then the subway. The last journey was a long walk through a neighborhood much of which was full of the smell of rubbish. I learned it was very important to work. No excuse.

When I was 12, I would, on some Saturdays, go to my father’s store to help out. After helping set up the outside clothing display, for the rest of the day, I’d watch to make sure no one stole anything. When I noticed someone looking unusual or strange, I would look the person in the eye, smile and say, “May I help you?” Usually that worked , but sometimes, someone would run off with something. The first time, I ran after the thief but my father shouted, “Martin, stop! There is no need to do that.” It’s true that safety is more important than money.

After 10 years of hard work, he saved up enough money to buy his first car, a cheap one--- he wouldn’t buy one until he could afford to pay for it without borrowing money. I learned you should buy only what you can afford. Buying necessary food and clothing won’t make us go in debt(債務(wù)). The unnecessary things won’t give us happiness, which comes from achievement only.

A study shows that one million lives might be saved each year if people wash their hands with soap(肥皂) often. It also says that hand-washing with soap could be among the best ways to reduce diseases. Doctors say many diseases can be prevented from spreading by hand-washing. These include the common cold, influenza(流行感冒), hepatitis(肝炎), infectious diarrhea(腹瀉) and so on.

Doctors say the easiest way to catch a cold is to touch your nose or eyes after someone nearby has sneezed or coughed. Another way to catch a disease is to eat food prepared by someone whose hands were not clean.

They also say that hand-washing is especially important before and after preparing food, before eating and after using the toilet, after touching money and sneezing or coughing. The most helpful way is to wash them together while using soap and warm water. You do not have to use special soap. Be sure to wash all areas of the hands for about ten to fifteen seconds.
