Lost in the Mountain
Teenager Jake Deham was skiing (滑雪) with his family in the USA when he fell over and lost one of his skis. His family didn’t know that he had a problem. They kept on skiing. When they got to the foot of the mountain, there was no sign of Jake.
Jake couldn’t find his ski anywhere. In the end, he decided to take off his other ski and walk down the mountain. But he couldn’t work out the right way to go.

But he had to get down the mountain. The TV programs always said,“ If you are lost, you should find someone else’ s tracks (足跡) through the snow and follow them.” “I wanted to live my life.” remembers Jake.“So I got up and I found some ski tracks and I followed those.” He walked and walked and finally he saw lights.Nine hours after he lost his ski, he found a team of worker who came to save him.He was safe!
His mum was very happy when she heard the news.Amazingly, Jake didn’t even have to go to hospital. He got through the terrible experience without any injuries.

Artificial intelligence: Google’s AlphaGo beats Go master Lee Se-dol
A computer program has beaten a master Go player 3-0 in a best-of-five competition, in what is seen as a landmark moment for artificial intelligence (人工智能).
Google‟s AlphaGo program was playing against Lee Se-dol in Seoul, in South Korea.
Mr Lee had been confident he would win before the competition started.
“AlphaGo played consistently (穩(wěn)定地) from beginning to the end while Lee, as he is only human, showed some mental weakness,” one of Lee‟s coaches, Kwon Kap-Yong, told the AFP news agency.
Mr Lee is considered as a successful Go player, having won many competitions in his career.
Go is a game of two players who take turns putting black or white stones on a 19-by-19 grid (棋格). Players win by surrounding their competitors pieces with their own.
In the first game of the series (系列賽), AlphaGo won by a very small chance – Mr Lee had led for most of the match, but AlphaGo managed to build up a strong lead in its closing stages.
After losing the second match to DeepMind, Lee Se-dol said he was “speechless” adding that the AlphaGo machine played a “nearly perfect game”.
Experts said that Lee Se-dol had brought his “top game” but that AlphaGo had won “in great style”.
The AlphaGo system was developed by British computer company DeepMind which was bought by Google in 2014. It has built up its special skills by studying older games and teasing out so many kinds of ways of play. And, according to DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, it has also spent a lot of time just playing the game.
“It played itself, millions and millions of times and each time got a little better – it learns from its mistakes,” he told the BBC before the matches started.
This good circle of continuous improvement meant the super computer went into the five-match series stronger than when it beat the European player late last year.
Does this mean artificial intelligence is now smarter than us and will kill us humans? Certainly not. AlphaGo doesn‟t care if it wins or loses. Does it mean that artificial intelligence will soon take your job? Possibly you should be more worried about that.
1.What had Lee Se-dol thought about the competition before it started?
A.He would beat AlphaGo.
B.AlphaGo would lead the match.
C.It was hard to tell who would win.
D.AlphaGo would have some weakness.
2.What happened in the first game of the series?
A.Mr Lee won by a very small chance.
B.AlphaGo had led for most of the match.
C.Mr Lee was beaten by AlphaGo finally.
D.AlphaGo built up a strong lead at the beginning.
3.What does the underlined phrase “teasing out” probably mean?
A.Giving out. B.Working out.
C.Running out. D.Pointing out.
4.The writer may agree that ______ in the future.
A.human will be killed by artificial intelligence
B.a(chǎn)rtificial intelligence will do everyt hing for human
C.people might lose jobs because of artificial intelligence
D.a(chǎn)rtificial intelligence will be much smarter than human

When you meet someone for the first time, you will get a general idea in your mind of that person in the first moment. Your feelings about other people, however, are really just show the way that you look at yourself. Your reactions to others say more about you than they do about others. You cannot really love or hate about yourself. We are usually drawn to those who are most like us and may dislike those who have the same characters as ourselves that we dislike.
Therefore, you can allow others to be the mirror to see more clearly your own feelings of self-worth. And, you can view the people you judge negatively (否定地) as mirrors to show you what you are not accepting about yourself.
To live peacefully with others, you will need to learn patience. A big challenge is to let your judgment of others be a lifelong research of yourself. Your task is to consider all the decisions and judgments you make onto others carefully and to begin to see whether you can use them to help yourself and become whole.
Several days ago I had a business lunch with a man who showed objectionable table manners. My first feeling was to judge him as rude. When I noticed that I was judging him, I stopped and asked myself what I was feeling. I discovered that I was nervous to be seen with someone who was eating with his mouth open and loudly blowing his nose. I was very surprised to find how much I cared about how the other people in the restaurant judged me.
Remember that your judgment of someone will not serve as some kind of protective thing against you becoming like him. Just because I judge my lunch partner as rude, it does not prevent me from ever looking or acting like him. In the same way, my patience to him would not cause me to suddenly begin eating my food with my mouth open.
When you get close to life in this manner, those with whom you hate very much as well as those whom you admire and love can be seen as mirrors, guiding you to discover parts of yourself that you dislike and to embrace your greatest characters you are proud of.
1.In the writer’s opinion, when we judge others, we are really ______.
A.treating them in a polite way
B.showing what we ourselves are
C.guiding ourselves to know them
D.telling them what they should do
2.Why did the writer feel bad when he was with his lunch partner?
A.Because he was afraid he himself might get the bad habits.
B.Because he was too angry to go on with his lunch any more.
C.Because he was afraid he might be thought badly of by others.
D.Because he was too nervous to speak his opinions out right there.
3.The underlined word “objectionable” in Paragraph 4 probably means ______.
A.unbelievable
B.unforgettable
C.unacceptable
D.unreasonable
4.The writer writes the passage to ______.
A.tell us a story that happened in a restaurant
B.a(chǎn)sk us not to behave rudely in some public places
C.encourage us to have the right attitude towards others
D.a(chǎn)dvise us to know ourselves from judging others properly
