A priest(牧師) had a cat that climbed up a tree in his backyard and then was afraid to come down. The priest persuaded(勸說), offered warm milk, etc. The kitty would not come down. The tree was not strong enough to climb, so the priest decided that if he tied a rope to his car and drove away so that the tree bent(彎曲)down, he could then reach up and get the kitty. He did so, checking his progress in the car again and again, then work out if he went just a little bit further, the tree would be bent enough for him to reach the kitty. But as he moved a little further forward, the rope broke.

The tree went “boing!” and the kitty at once sailed through the air —out of sight. The priest felt terrible. He walked all over the neighborhood asking people if they’d seen his kitty. Nobody had seen a lost kitty.

So, he prayed(祈禱), “God, I just give this kitty to your keeping,” and went on about his business.

Several days later he was at the grocery store, meeting one of his church(教堂) members. He happened to look into her shopping cart and was amazed to see cat food. Now this woman was a cat hater and everyone knew it, so he asked her, “Why are you buying cat food when you hate cats so much?”

She replied, “You won’t believe this,” and told him how her little girl had been begging her for a cat, but she kept refusing. Then a few days before, the child begged again, so the Mom finally told her little girl, “Well, if God gives you a cat, you can keep it. ” She told the priest, “I watched my child go out in the yard, get on her knees, and ask God for a cat. You won’t believe this, but I saw it with my own eyes. A cat suddenly came flying out of the blue sky, with its paws spread out, and landed right in front of her. ”

3.Why was the priest amazed when he saw the woman had bought much cat food?

D. Because he knew clearly she didn’t like a cat.

4.Who gave the girl a cat?

"Tammy! Come here, please! Mother needs your help in the kitchen." Her father called out to her.

Tammy was in her room, getting ready to do her homework. "Yes, Daddy!" she replied. "I'll be right there."

She hurried out of her bedroom and down the hallway. She was only nine years old. Her elder sister, Ella, had just moved away to go to a performing arts high school in another city. Her brother, Harry, was in middle school and always got home late. With Ella leaving home, Tammy was expected to do a lot more than she had ever done before, especially now, because her mother was ill.

Her father was in the kitchen. "Tammy, I know you usually do your homework right now, but with things being different, we all have to change a little bit. I'll help you and Harry with your homework later on, OK?"

Her father had an apron(圍裙) on over his clothes, and he looked kind of funny. He was doing the dishes and he always splashed(濺出) water all over when he did that. After helping her father with the dishes, Tammy helped set the table.

After supper, her father helped her and Harry with their homework, and then they played a board game so that their mother could lie down for a while.

The next morning, Tammy got up early on her own because she wanted to help her mother with breakfast. She made orange juice and even put bread in the toaster and got out the butter so that her mother could sleep for a few more minutes.

When her mother got up half an hour later, she was very surprised and moved to see the breakfast on the dining table. She gave Tammy a big hug.

"Thank you, Tammy. You really are mother's little helper now, aren't you?"

1.Why did Tammy's sister move out of their home?

A. was a middle school student

科目:初中英語 來源:四川省遂寧市市城區(qū)2016-2017學(xué)年七年級上學(xué)期教學(xué)水平監(jiān)測英語試卷 題型:閱讀理解

What do you know about English names? A Chinese name is different from an English name. In China, first name is after family name. Most English people have three names: a first name, a middle name and the family name. Their family name comes last. For example, my full name is Jim Alan Green. Green is my family name. People don’t use their middle names very much. So “John Henry Brown” is usually called “John Brown”. People never use Mr., Mrs. or Miss before their first names. So you can say John Brown, or Mr. Brown; but you should never say Mr. John. They use Mr., Mrs. or Miss with the family name but never with the first name. Everyone has a family name. But what does it mean(含義)?

First, some family names come from the place(地點) of their homes. If a man lives on or near(在…附近) a hill, his family name may be Hill. In England, people’s family name may be Wood, Lake, because they live near the woods (樹林)or lakes(湖泊).

Second, family names come from a man’s job(工作). If a man is a cook(廚師), his family name may be Cook.

1.In England, last name is after ______.

A. family name B. first name C. full name

2.If a man’s family name is Lake, where could he live?

A. Near a lake. B. Near a hill. C. Near the woods.

3.What can we call Frank Alan Smith?

A. Frank. B. Mr. Frank. C. Mr. Alan

4.In the name “Bob Dale Brown”, which(哪個) is the Middle name?

A. Bob. B. Dale. C. Brown.

5.Which is right according to(根據(jù)) the passage(文章)?

A. English people have only two names.

B. In England, family names may come from a man’s job.

C. English people use middle names much.
