Comments[4]

I think people should do more things online at home. Why pollute the   air  ( by driving your car to the supermarket when you can order your weekly   shopping on the Internet? You can also book holidays as well.                                          Posted hy Billy on June 1 1th 7 :.36 a.m.

I try to use public transportation whenever I can. I take the bus to   college         and walk home. When my mum wants to give me a lift, I always refuse,  as I can get   there quickly by bus. Also, the buses in my town arc electric, I so they are environmentally friendly !

Why not use two   wheels? Any motorcycle will use less fuel (燃料)than a car. You don't get caught in traffic jams either ! But in my opinion, the   best things are bicycles. They don't   produce any pollution and help you to       keep fit at the same time.

I can't get to my university by bus or train. So I found three other   girls               who live nearby and share my car with   them. And now we take it in turns to drive every day. I have cut down the   cost―and most importantly, I am protecting the environment !

Sky and Canfield are two seaside towns, not far from each other. Both towns have many hotels, and in the summer the hotels are full of holidaymakers and other people.

Last August there was a fire at the Star Hotel in Sky. The next day, this news was on page two of the town's newspaper―The Sky Post: Fire at Star.

Late last night firemen (消防隊員) hurried to the Star Hotel and quickly put out a small fire in a bedroom. The hotel manager said that a cigarette (香煙) started the fire. We say again to all our visitors, "Please don't smoke cigarettes in bed."This was Sky's first hotel fire for five years.

The Canfield Times gave the news in these words on page one: Another Sky Hotel Catches Fire.

Last night Sky firemen arrived just too late to save clothing, bedclothes and other things at the Star Hotel. An angry holidaymaker said, "An electric lamp (電燈) probably started the fire. The bedroom lamps are very old at some of these hotels. When I put my bedside light on,I heard a funny noise from the lamp."We are glad to tell our readers that this kind of accident does not happen in Canfield.

What are the facts, then? It is never easy to find out the exact truth about an accident. There was a fire at the Star Hotel last August, that is one fact. Do we know anything else? Yes―we know that firemen went to the hotel. Now what do you think of the rest of the "news"?

   C. Because no one dared speak of the truth.

   D. Because no one saw the fire.

An elderly (年長的,老的,漸老的) builder was ready to retire. He told his employer of his plans to leave the house building business and live a more comfortable life with his wife. He would miss the paycheck, but he needed to retire. They could manage.

The employer was sorry to see his good worker go and asked if he could build just one more house as a personal favor. The builder said yes,but at that time it was easy to see that his heart was not in his work. He built it carelessly and used poor materials. It was an unfortunate way to end his career.

When the builder finished his work, the employer came to him and handed the front door key to the builder. "This is your house," he said. "My gift to you."

What a shock! What a shame! If he had only known he was building his own house,he would have done it all so differently. Now he had to live in the home he had built!

So it is with us. Sometimes we build our lives carelessly, willing to put up less than the best. At important points we do not give the job our best effort. Then with a shock we find that we are now living in the house we have built. If we had realized it before,we would have done it differently.

Think of yourself as the builder. Think about your house. Each day you hammer a nail, place a board,or set up a wall. Build wisely. It is the only life you will ever build. Even if you can live for only one day more, that day is worthy to be lived well. Life is a do-it-yourself project.

Who could say it more clearly? Your life today is the result of your attitudes and the choices in the past. Your life tomorrow will be the result of your attitudes and the choices you make today.

Two years ago,I bought my girlfriend Nicole a pair of fur earmuffs (耳套) .She loved the gift and she wore them every day.

Last week,Nicole was on her way home from work, taking the New York City subway. The train stopped at Union Square. As Nicole stepped through the subway door, the earmuffs fell from her head, and dropped on the rails (鐵軌) below. Nicole was upset. "Dot't go down to the rails," somebody shouted to her. Good advice. Union Square is a busy station, with trains running past nearly every minute, and there's electricity running through the rails.

Nicole walked up to a subway worker and explained what had happened. "Sony,I can't help you," the worker said. "Maybe you could use a stick or something to fish it out." Where would she get something like that at the subway station? Disappointed,Nicole walked back to where the earmuffs fell. A homeless man was sitting right near the place.
