Alice Munro was born in Wingham, Ontario. Her father, Robert Eric Laidlaw, was a fox and mink (貂) farmer, and her mother, Anne Clarke Laidlaw, was a school teacher. Munro began writing as a teenager. Her first story, The Dimensions of a Shadow, came out in 1950 while she was studying at the University of Western Ontario. During this period she worked as a waitress, a tobacco picker, and a library clerk (職員).
Munro’s first collection of stories, Dance of the Happy Shades (1968), won the Governor General’s Award, Canada’s highest literary (文學(xué)的) prize. That success was followed by Lives of Girls and Women (1971), a collection of interlinked (相互關(guān)聯(lián)的) stories sometimes incorrectly described as a novel. In 1978, Munro’s collection of interlinked stories Who Do You Think You Are? was published. This book earned Munro a second Governor General’s Literary Award. From 1979 to 1982, she toured Australia, China and Scandinavia. In 1980, Munro held the position of writer in residence (住校) at both the University of British Columbia and the University of Queensland. Through the 1980s and 1990s, she published a short-story collection about once every four years.
On 10 October, 2013, Munro was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. She is known as a “master of the contemporary (當(dāng)代的) short story”. She is the first Canadian and the 13th woman to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature.

It was the first day of school. I had a new classmate, a little old lady with a warm smile.
She said, “Hi, young man! I'm Rose. I’m 87 years old. Can I give you a hug? ”
I said      , “Of course!”
“Why are you in college at such an age?” I asked.
She joked, “I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, have children, and then travel around the world.”
“No, seriously,” I asked.
“I always dreamed of having a college education. Now I’m getting one!” she told me.
After a year, Rose became       . She could easily get along well with others wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she enjoyed the attention from others.
At the end of the term we invited Rose to       at our party. I’ll never forget what she taught us.
“We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. Here are the secrets of staying young. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you        your dreams, you die!” she said.
“There is a big       between growing old and growing up. Anybody can grow old. That doesn’t take any talent,” she added. “But to grow up, you have to find the chance in change. Have no regrets(遺憾). We usually don’t have regrets for what we did,      rather for things we did not do.”
Finally we graduated from the college with Rose. One week after graduation, she died peacefully in her sleep. She taught us by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.
