Every 14 days, another language dies. There are many reasons for this. Some people think more common languages have more economic(經(jīng)濟(jì)的)power. Because of this, young people choose to learn a common language as they think it is more useful. Another reason is that some languages aren't written down. Guujaaw is a leader of the Haida Nation, whose people have lived on the Queen Charlotte Islands, Canada, for more than 10, 000 years. Their language is endangered. Traditionally, it wasn’t written down, and, as a result, some people are worried that it will die one day. Guujaaw replies to this, "We talk to each other, listen, visit, and believe in the spoken word. Expressing yourself without writing is natural." However, if Guujaaw's language and others like it are going to stay alive, writing may have to become part of their lives.

When a language dies, a lot of knowledge dies with it. To begin with, language is a huge part of the culture of the people who speak it. Language allows speakers to say certain things: words that describe a cultural idea may not translate exactly into another language. Furthermore, many endangered languages have rich spoken cultures, Stories, songs and histories are passed on from older people to younger generations(一代), Elizabeth Lindsey, an expert in languages, emphasizes(強(qiáng)調(diào)) this. “When an elder dies, a library is burned,” she says.

Also, language death affects our knowledge about nature. Local people often have a deep understanding of plants, animals, and the relationship between them. David Harrison, a researcher on endangered languages, reflects, “80% of plant and animal species(物種)have been undiscovered by science. But that doesn’t mean they're unknown to humans.”

Many languages are endangered. However, it s not too late. Children often grow up speaking two languages. "No one ..becomes richer by giving up… one language to learn another,” Harrison said. If children feel both languages are important, they will use both. So, it is necessary that children realize how useful their local language is.

1.How many reasons are mentioned for endangered languages in Paragraph 1?

A. 2 B. 3. C. 4 D. 5.

2.In Paragraph 2, the writer mainly tells us_____.

A. how cultures are passed on B. how cultures are discovered

C. why languages are written down D. why languages are important to cultures

3.The underlined word "affects" in the passage means “_______”.

A. waits for B. depends on

C. is different from D. has an influence on

4.Which of the following is the writer's opinion?

A. People need to use common languages more often.

B. The spoken word is more important than the written word.

C. Children are the hope to stop the local language from dying.

D. Many animals and plants are in danger because of dying languages.

William Blake described the eyes as the “windows of the soul.” Our eyes are the windows through which we see the world around us. Either way, there’s no question that we place great value on our eyes and our eyesight. Surveys have shown that of the five senses, sight is the one that people fear losing the most.

Thinking about the important function of our eyes, we’d give them the best care possible, but sometimes we get too busy or forget to do a few simple things that can keep our eyes healthy.

Protecting your eyes starts with the food on your plate. Remember when you were a kid and your mom told you that carrots would improve your eyesight. Well, she might be right. Proper food will keep your eyes strong and healthy.

Give up your daily habits that could seriously injure your eyes. Always wear sunglasses in a sunny day to protect your eyes from ultraviolet ray(紫外線). Rest your eyes every 20 minutes from the computer screen by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At least every 2 hours, get up and take a 15-minute break when working at a computer.

Make sure your eyes do not get injured in the first place. You should try to prevent eye injuries whether you’re playing sports or doing housework. You should also know when to wear safety glasses and what kinds will work best for you.

Last but not least, get your eyes examined regularly. Eye exams can help find some eye diseases. It’s important to find these diseases early on, when they’re easier to treat.

1.According to a survey, people fear losingmost.

Canada, Mexico and the United States won their joint bid(聯(lián)合申辦) to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the 68th FIFA Congress. This is the first World Cup to be hosted in three countries. The joint bid, called United 2026, won 134 out of the total 203 votes.

Football officials(官員) from the three countries cheered for the news. They said,“It is an important moment to show that we are all truly united through sport. And they are ready to welcome the world to North America and do everything they can for the largest FIFA World Cup in history.”

Morocco also wished to host the 2026 World Cup. But the north African nation only got 65 votes, with a score of 2.7 out of 5.0 when checking their ability to host the World Cup while the United 2026 got 4.0 as they have more support from their countries and are better able to cover the cost.

Among the four countries, the US hosted a World Cup in 1994 and Mexico held twice in 1970 and in 1986. The World Cup has never been held in Canada or Morocco. Unluckily, it was the fifth time that Morocco had failed to host a World Cup.

There is also good news for all football fans The 2026 Word Cup will see more teams playing in it, with 48 teams and a total of 80 matches, compared to the 32 teams and 64 matches of the World Cup in Russia. Maybe the Chinese football team will make it in 2026!
