【題目】 "Where’s Daddy going with the axe(斧頭)?"said Joan to her mother.

"Out to the hoghouse(豬圈)," replied Mrs. Arable. "Some pigs were born last night."

"I don’t know why he needs an axe," continued Joan. She was only eight.

"Well," said her mother, "one of the pigs is very small, thin and weak, and it will never grow up. So your father has to do away with it."

"Do away with it?" cried Joan. "Just because it’s smaller than the others?"

"Don’t cry, Joan!" Mrs Arable said. "The pig would probably die anyway." Joan pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors.

"Please don’t do it!" she said with eyes full of tears(眼淚). "It’s not its mistake to be so weak." "Joan," Mr. Arable said gently, "you will have to learn to control yourself." "This is a matter of life and death, and you talk about controlling myself." cried Joan. Tears ran down her face and she took hold of the axe and tried to pull it out of her father’s hand.

"Joan," said Mr. Arable, "I know more about raising pigs than you do. A thin and weak pig makes trouble."

"But it’s not right," cried Joan. "If I had been very weak at birth, would you have killed me?" Mr. Arable smiled. "Certainly not," he said, looking down at his daughter with love. "But this is different. A little girl is one thing; a little weak pig is another. "

"I see no difference," replied Joan, still holding on to the axe. "This is the most terrible thing I have ever heard of." A strange look came over Mr. Arable’s face. He seemed almost ready to cry himself.

It is often said that the best way to get to the bottom of a hard problem is to sleep on it. Does this make sense? A new study shows that it does.

A team of researchers at Northwestern University, US, found that sleeping is useful in both strengthening(增強(qiáng)) and reorganizing(重組)memory. 1

The researchers did an experiment on 57 university students. They asked students to solve 42 difficult puzzles (謎題) on the first day.2 The researchers encouraged students to remember the music they heard while solving the puzzles. By the end, there were six puzzles that the students still hadn't solved.

3 They were given special sleep-monitoring(睡眠監(jiān)測(cè))and music devices(設(shè)備). The devices played music linked with the unsolved puzzles while the students were in the slow-wave(慢波) sleep stage (階段). This stage is when people are likely to dream and reorganize their memories.

The next morning, the students tried the unsolved puzzles again.4 The music activated(激活) the memories they had of the puzzles while they were sleeping. It allowed them to "work” on the puzzles in their sleep.

Former studies of both people and animals have shown that sleep can not only strengthen memory, but also help us organize and send information.5 So the next time you face a difficult problem, sleep on it. Play some music to remind yourself of the problem.

A.Researchers found they were 55 percent more likely to solve them.

B.This can help you solve problems.

C.This study is more evidence(證據(jù))of these findings.

D.The students then went back home to sleep.

E.Students worked on each puzzle while listening to different music.

【題目】 Once there was a poor lady who lived on a hill near the sea. She lived a lonely life. She was so poor that she had to work hard every day.

But one night as she sat at the table, the lady said to herself, “Why can’t I do good to others?” At last, she came up with an idea.

She decided to keep a lighted lamp () at the window for the sailors every night. She found that ships sometimes broke up on the rocks in the sea, since there was no lighthouse to warn them of the danger at night. Maybe her lamp would warn them when their ships came near the rocks on the coast.

The lady felt glad when the thought came through her mind. So she worked late and made money to buy the oil for the lamp and then she placed the lamp at the window each night. In this way she saved many lives.

She did this for five years without the hope of reward ( 報(bào)酬). However, good acts were often found out. The sailors whose lives had been saved began to send gifts to her. They sent her tea from China, cloth from India, silk from France and grapes from Spain. But the poor lady did not need these gifts to make her happy. She gave many of them to the poor and the sick.

She was happy with the thought that she was doing good. So, as long as she lived, she lit her lamp each night, and placed it at the window.

1What can we know about the lady?

C.Because the sailors didn’t have enough experience.D.Because the rocks were too large to avoid.

3How might the sailors feel when they saw the lamp at the window?

A.Lucky.B.Thankful.C.Sorry.D.Proud.

4What can we learn from the passage?

A.No pains, no gains.

B.Where there is a will, there is a way.

C.Nothing is more important than safety.

D.It is always worth doing something good for others.

【題目】 As one of the world’s top universities, Oxford attracts students from around the world. Besides needing a perfect academic record. students have to go through a rigorous ( 嚴(yán) ) interview process, sometimes across days.

If you’re preparing for studying overseas, here’s our advice for putting your best foot forward.

Questions

You might have heard about the strange questions you might face, such as why are ladybirds red? These questions are not as random (隨意的) as they seem and are often related to your course or interests. In truth, there is no wrong way to answer these questions as they are designed to show how your mind approaches problems.

You can’t prepare for these, but you can practice explaining your thoughts aloud about different topics.

Preparation

Most of your interviews will be made up of what you wrote in your application. So make sure you review everything you’ve submitted (提交) as you will be asked about any writers or scientific theories you’ve mentioned. It’s not a good look if you can’t discuss your subject area or struggle to form your own opinions about it.

It’s also OK to say you’re unfamiliar with a question, but always attempt to answer it.

Interviews aren’t everything

Don’t worry about any mistakes you make. Your whole application is more than just a meeting, so take the time to de-stress and visit local sites.

It is also common for students to have an additional interview with another Oxford college if your interviewer is unsure about you. Take it as a second chance.

Overall, think and act as you usually would. Everyone there is gifted, but demonstrating (證明)) how your mind works and how you approach difficult things is how you will stand out.

1According to the passage, how can you prepare for the questions in interviews?

A.Search for information about ladybirds.B.Try to solve problems all by yourself.

C.Pay attention to your course or interests.D.Practice explaining your thoughts aloud.

2What does the underlined word “additional”mean in the passage?

A.ExtraB.SpecialC.UsualD.Complete

3Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Interviews have something to do with what you wrote in your application.

B.You need to think and act much better than how you behave in your daily life.

C.You will be asked about a writer or scientific theories that you just heard about.

D.You should be careful not to make any mistakes when you are having interviews.
