【題目】

Ukuleles(尤克里里)look like small guitars, but unlike guitars, they usually only have four strings. Ukuleles come from Hawaii(夏威夷)and make bright, happy sounds. They make people think of island vacations and summer days. Even though ukuleles come from Hawaii, they are now popular around the world. One of the reasons is because they are fun and easy to play.

Playing a ukulele may be easy, but making one is not. Ukuleles must be made step by step. First the head and neck are glued to the body. As soon as the glue is dry, the fingerboard is glued onto the neck. Once(一旦)that is dry, the ukulele maker sands the fingerboard to make it smooth.

Next, the bridge is glued onto the body. The bridge holds the strings and allows them to make sounds. After the bridge is in place, the ukulele can be painted and decorated. The next step is to connect tuning heads to the top of the ukulele. Then finally the strings are put on the instrument. Now a player can make music.

1According to the article, what kind of music does a Ukulele make?

A. Sad music. B. Fun music. C. Difficult music. D. Unpopular music.

2How is a Ukulele made according to the article?

A. In an easy way. B. Like a big guitar. C. In several steps. D. With some strings.

Death of science icon(巨匠)

In modern history, there has perhaps never been a scientist as

well-known as Stephen Hawking. Whether he was educating the world with

his knowledge of the universe(宇宙), or making fun of himself in TV shows

like The Simpsons, it’s hard to imagine what the world will be like but now

Hawking is no longer in it.

On March 14, the British physicist passed away at his home in Cambridge, England. Since then, many people have expressed their sadness in public, including British computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee, who invented the World Wide Web. “We have lost a great mind and a wonderful spirit,” Berners-Lee wrote.

Hawking was an icon for many reasons, but he will be best remembered for his work in the field of science. Building on German scientist Albert Einstein’s work, Hawking explained his belief that space started with the Big Bang, and will end with Black Holes. This idea kicked off a series of scientific studies including into the origin of the universe itself.

Besides his work in science, he also managed to overcome many difficulties in his personal life. While studying at Cambridge University, he got a serious illness at the age of 21. His illness left him disabled and he was told he only had a short time to live. However, as we all know, he went on to become one of the greatest minds that the world has ever known.

Hawking leaves behind a great legacy(遺產(chǎn)). His book A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes that came out in 1988, became one of the world’s best-sellers. He may no longer be with us, but Hawking will continue to inspire the world for generations to come. As he once said himself, “Look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”

Have you tried public bicycles? Public bicycles have recently become popular in big cities. But some people still question whether it really is easy to use the public bicycles. 1

A group of students, at Shenzhen High School, Guangdong, are interested in it. 2 Through interviews and an online questionnaire (問卷), they found the

biggest problem was that many bicycles were broken. 3 So, these students designed a smart storeroom that could store and protect bicycles.

They tried many designs, but finally made the smart circle storeroom. A storeroom can store 15 bicycles. Lei Mingcong, 12, the main designer, said he got the idea from his own life. “I found out that our public library has a smart storage machine. 4 Also, I noticed collective clothes

hangers (集合式晾衣架) are often found. They hang the most clothes.”

So how does the storeroom work? There is a smart mechanical device (機(jī)械裝置) at the center of it. 5 “It is all controlled by computer programs. Just like a‘smart home’, the device

could work by pressing a button ( 動(dòng) ),” said Wang Shunzhi, another designer of the storeroom.

B. It was the rain and sun that caused the problem.

C. It helps readers return books easily and quickly.

【題目】The rising costs of health care have become a problem for many countries in the world. To deal with this problem, it is recommended that a big part of the government's health budget (預(yù)算) be used for health education and disease prevention instead of treatment. In fact, many kinds of diseases are preventable in many ways and preventing a disease is usually much cheaper than treating it. For example, people could avoid catching a cold if they dressed warmly when the weather starts getting cold. But many people get sick because they fail to do so, and have to spend money seeing a doctor.

Daily habits like eating more healthy food would have kept millions of families from becoming bankrupt if the patients had taken action for early prevention. For example, keeping a balanced diet seems to be quite important.

One very effective (有效的) and costless way of prevention is regular (規(guī)律的) exercise, which is necessary for a healthy mind and body. Regular exercise, such as running, walking, and playing sports is a good way to make people feel better or reduce stress.

Health education plays a key role in improving people's health. By giving people more information about health, countries could help people understand the importance of disease prevention and ways to achieve it. For example, knowing one's family medical history is an effective way to help keep healthy. Information about health problems among close relatives will make them aware of what they should do to prevent certain diseases through lifestyle changes, which will work before it is too late.

However, paying more attention to disease prevention does not mean medical treatment is unimportant. After all, prevention and treatment are just two different ways toward the same effect. In conclusion, we could save money on health care and treat patients more successfully if our country spends more money on health prevention and education.
