Spring Festival living tips for foreigners
As Chinese New Year is coming, foreign readers share their tips on how to spend the festival in China. You're welcome to add your suggestions.
1.Don't travel during the holidays.
"Don’t travel during the holidays" is one golden rule that I have
followed for years, especially during Spring Festival as the traffic is
heavy. You can see a large army of Chinese passengers gather at
every train station.
2.Enjoy the dinner on New Year's Eve.
I always spend Spring Festival with a Chinese family, eating
dumplings, laughing and joking. I love the Chinese and there are no other people I would rather spend my time with.
3.Don't forget the hongbao.
Usually, I send money to friends by New Year red packets on my mobile phone. "Digital Hongbao" is more popular than traditional ones. People use QQ and WeChat to give hongbao instead of the traditional red packets.
4.Set off fireworks.
I really love to watch fireworks, for some reason they make us feel so excited! I’m really glad I’m here in China for the Chinese New Year, I've never seen so many fireworks in my life! I do wish people would be more careful, especially with their children. I always remind kids who are playing to keep away from some fireworks that I’m going off.
5.Watch the Spring Festival Gala.
While I don't understand Chinese, the show itself is very good. I was quite impressed (印象深刻的). The CCTV Spring Festival Gala is one of the most amazing TV shows from an artistic point of view.

“Mum, I hate you. I don't need a new schoolbag or clothes. I'm not afraid of being hit by you. I only want you to come back.”
When Chen Jiuying read her daughter's letter, she couldn't help crying. Chen and her husband are now working far away from their hometown. Their daughter, Xiao Li, is looked after by her grandparents. Like Chen, many migrant workers(外來務(wù)工人員) are dreaming about a better life, so they have to leave their children behind.
According to a survey, there are now about 61 million left-behind children(留守兒童) in poor areas in China. This has brought about many problems. These children care little about others. They do not do well at school. They lost confidence.
Luckily many Chinese are now thinking about the life of the left-behind children and actions have been taken to help solve the problem.
A charity event took place in Beijing before Children's Day. Its aim was to raise social awareness(意識(shí)) of left?behind children. The event was held to raise money from businesses and the public to prepare “l(fā)ove bags”. Inside the bags, these are things for children including books, torches, and envelopes and stamps so that children can write to their parents.
The event was started by Chen Weihong, a television host in China. “The left?behind children don't have enough parental love and family care. They need to be in touch with their parents. We hope our love bags will help them communicate with their parents, and make them happier,” he said.
