Maybe you know floods, droughts, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on. But have you ever heard of typhoons(臺風)?

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates(蒸發(fā)) into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then, cooler air rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles, and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 meters a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts, One is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast.

The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest winds and hardest rains are.

Typhoons are very dangerous. In 2004, Typhoon Yunna killed 164 people in Zhejiang, and 24 people were missing. In May 2006, Typhoon Pearl hit Guangdong and Fujian, and thousands of houses were damaged(毀壞).

What to do when a typhoon hits:

• Stay inside, Close all the windows and stay away from them.

• Listen to the radio or TV for important information.

It was nearly dark. The sun was dropping down the mountains far away. Little Tom came back home, with tears in his eyes.

“What’s the matter, Tom? How’s your trip?” his mother asked with a big smile. “ I failed. The mountain was so high and full of big or small stones on the way. I still went ahead. But I was tired and it was so late that I had to come back,” Tom cried. “ It doesn’t matter. You are only 14 years old after all. You will have another chance,” his mother said. “But, standing at the top of the mountain is my dream!” Tom said. His father came over and asked, “ Did you see the green trees on your way to the mountain?” “Sure, and there were a lot of beautiful flowers by the side of the road,” Tom replied. “Did you hear the birds singing?” his father asked. “There were many kinds of birds singing in the trees, and the sound was very sweet,” Tom said. “Did you feel the beauty of nature?” his father asked. “Yes, the blue sky, the white clouds, the green trees and the colorful flowers made a nice picture,” Tom answered. “That’s enough!” his father smiled and said, “Please remember, my son. Imagine if your journey to work was from your bedroom to your living room. More and more people in the UK are doing their jobs at home.

David works as an engineer in a London factory. He's been an engineer since he left school-but he is feeling less hopeful about his future. Heavy industry in the UK has almost disappeared. David also gets tired of his long train journey to work. It can take up to two hours a day.

David's wife, Helen, seldom travels to work at all. She is a writer. After she sent her children to school, she starts to work in front of her computer screen. When she finishes her books, she sends them to her director by email.

Most people in the UK, like David come(經(jīng)常往返)to work, but an increasing number of people work as teleworkers.

So what are the advantages? Tele-workers can save hours by not traveling to work. "I hated my journey to work," says Helen. "Now all I have to do is to walk downstairs!" Many teleworkers say that working from home is much less stressful-good news for both workers and managers.

So is telecommuting( 遠程辦公)for everyone? "It, hard at first ",says Helen," because our living mom is also my office, and disciplining yourself(自我控制)to work from home can be difficult.

But overall, I love it.

1.More and more people in the UK, doing their jobs at home.

2.David is also interested in his long train journey to work

3.When David's wife finishes her books, she sends them electronically to her director.

4.Teleworkers can't save hours by working at home.
