The last Monday in March is an important day in China. It is a day for school safety education. This year, the day falls on March 25. It helps students learn more about safety and make sure they are safe. What are some accidents at school? How can you keep yourself safe? Take a look!
The main accidents at school are stampedes(踩踏), earthquakes and fires.
A stampede always happens in crowded places. When students around you begin to push, stand there and try to hold onto something. If you fall down in the crowd, put your hands around your head. Move to one side, and bend(彎) your body and legs.
Earthquakes happen all over the world. When you feel everything is moving, quickly get under a desk and hold on, according to China Earthquake Administration(地震局). If you are outdoors, find a place away from buildings, trees, and power lines(電線).
When there’s a fire, leave the classroom quickly. It’s better to put something wet over your mouth and nose. This way, you won’t breathe in smoke. Many people die in a fire, not because of the fire, but smoke. It makes them cough and they can’t breathe. That’s very dangerous! So when you want to get out, you should make yourself lower to the floor. Then you can breathe some fresh air.在

At 6:30 in early morning, Chen Liang drives his new yellow school bus through villages, taking children to his kindergartens (幼兒園).
Chen and his wife Pang Qiuxiang ran two kindergartens in Shanqian Village and Lanxi Village in Qingdao. Pang works as the head of two kindergartens, and Chen takes many responsibilities (責(zé)任), from driving to fixing desks and chairs and buying food. Everything seems common in the kindergartens. But one thing makes the kindergartens unique and well-known to the locals. They are free.
In 2006, when the couple took over the kinder-garten from Chen’s mother, it was not free. At that time, Pang took on the main tasks because Chen was busy operating his hotel on the seaside.
But a small pitiful (令人同情的) action of one child touched Pang deeply. “The parents could choose to pay if they would like their children to have dessert. Some parents could not afford to pay the extra fees so their children couldn’t enjoy dessert. Once I saw a child pick up an empty biscuit package which was left by another child, and eat the crumbs (食品屑) in it. I was astonished by the scene,” Pang said. It is true that people with better education are usually able to get better paying jobs. In other words, they have more chances to choose a good job while people with little or no education don’t. It seems that the purpose of education is to make people get jobs. But this isn’t accepted by all people.
Some people may think that a person should spend the best years of his life to get education only for a way of living. This was probably one of the earliest reasons of education. In fact, if education is just a way of making a living, people don’t need to spend so much time in school. People can get education for a living in a short time. Subjects like history and geography need not be taught to everyone. Even language and maths need not be taught in detail, either. Here it is clear that education is much more than teaching a man to get a way of living.
Education is well-rounded and it is mainly for improving a man. It is not only to teach him to speak, read and write, but also to develop his creative thinking and other abilities. After that, it is to make him a wise man and thankfully enjoy the achievements of human. Educationis to make a man lead a better life. Educated people are expected to be able to listen to good music, read good books, watch plays and take an interest in the world.
I would agree that making a good living is an important reason for education, but certainly not the most important or the main reason.

Two students started quarreling at school. One student shouted dirty words at the other, and a fight began.
What can be done to stop fights like this at school? In some schools, disputants ( 爭(zhēng)執(zhí)者 ) sit down with peer mediators (同齡調(diào)解員). Peer mediators are usually students with special training in this kind of problem.
Peer mediators help disputants to talk in a friendly way. Here are some of the ways they use.
Express what you think clearly but don’t say anything to hurt the other. Begin with “I feel” instead of “You always”.
Listen carefully to what the other person is saying. Don’t stop the other person’s words.
Keep looking at the other person’s eyes when he or she is speaking.
Try to see the problems on the other person’s side.
Never put anyone down . Saying things like “You are foolish” makes the talk difficult.
Try to find a result that makes both people happy.
Peer mediators never decide on the winner. They don’t decide who is right or who is wrong. Instead they help disputants find their own“win-win” result. A “win –win” result can make everyone feel good.
Peer mediators’ work is often successful just because it gets disputants to talk to each other. And getting disputants to talk to each other is the first step in finding a “win-win” result.
【小題1】 Peer mediators’ work is ____________.
A.to teach lessons to disputants |

B.disputants will understand peer mediators better. |
C.it is easy for peer mediators to decide who is right. |

What to do if you don't feel popular?
● Try to take part in activities. Call your friends. Plan to do something. The worst feeling is staying home alone, because it makes you feel even more lonely.
● Try to make new friends. Choose friends carefully, not just because you think they're popular. And remember, making good friends takes time. Choosing a popular person to be friends with is okay, if they are nice.
● Be yourself (保持獨(dú)立). If you want to become friends with someone who's popular, don't make yourself into someone you are not just to impress that person.
● Be nice. Be friendly. Be outgoing (開(kāi)朗的). But don't overdo it! Talk to trusted friends if you are feeling really bad. Or you might want to write it down in a journal (期刊) or diary.
● Do something special for yourself. You could take pictures of your friends, or collect their school pictures, and take a collage (拼貼畫(huà)) to hang on your wall. This will remind (提醒) you, when you are feeling unpopular, that you really do have friends.
● Think up your own ideas. These suggestions might not work for everyone.
What to do if you have a problem with your teacher?
● Talk to your parents, or another adult who will listen to you and perhaps can help. Talk to your friends. Maybe they have had problems with the same teacher, too.
● Don't give the teacher a reason to have problems with you. Do your work, complete your task, attend the class seriously and take notes. Maybe you just need to give the teacher a chance (機(jī)會(huì)).
● Try to find out what the problem is.
● Talk to the teacher if you feel comfortable doing this. Don't be nasty (鬧別扭的), but express your concerns (關(guān)心). Listen to the teacher, as well.
● Just accept the fact that you're not going to love all your teachers.
