In one way, it may be thought that failure(失敗)is a part of life. In another, failure may be regarded as a step towards success.
The "spider-story" is often told as an example of this. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a hole on a hill from the English. He watched a spider(蜘蛛) making a web. Bruce is said to have got confidence from this and to have gone on to beat the English. Edison, too, the inventor of the light bulb(電燈泡) , made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.
So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were you in high spir¬it then? What can you change so that things will go right the next time?
Second, is the goal(目標(biāo)) you are trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question: "If I am successful in this, where will it get me?" This may help to prevent failure in the things you shouldn't be doing anyway.
The third thing to remember about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to "live with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, "You can't win them all. “

Would you like to have an electric car? We will see this kind of cars soon in America. These quiet, clean cars run on electricity. Carmakers will start selling electric cars in 2011.
The world’s population will jump from 6.8 billion to 9 billion by 2050. The need for cars will jump with it. But the oil(石油) won’t keep up with the number of cars on the road. So the price of oil will go up.
Electric cars aren’t perfect just yet. It can take eight hours to charge(充電) a car for only 100 miles of driving. And the distance(路程) that cars can go depends on driving conditions(條件). How far it travels depends on the weather and traffic.
Price is a problem, too. Electric models cost much more than oil-powered cars. The good news is that electric-car technology is getting better. As it does, the prices of this kind of cars are dropping.
To charge the car, the US Department of Energy is paying for at least 10,000 charging stations around the country. Private businesses are also getting ready for it. It will cost about $3 for each charge.

After Pluto (冥王星) was found in 1930, people took it as the ninth planet in our solar system(太陽系). But it isn’t like other planets. It is smaller and has an strange orbit(軌道). On August 24,2006, scientists said,“Pluto is not a planet.”
About 2,500 scientists met in Prague(布拉格,捷克首都). At first, some of them said that there would be 12 planets in our solar system. In the end, the scientists said that only Mercury(水), Venus(金), Earth, Mars(火), Jupiter(木), Saturn(土), Uranus(天王)and Neptune(海王)are the planets in the solar system. ②Each of these planets has its own orbit, and of the planets is big enough to be a planet. Since January 2013, many cities in China have seen a lot of foggy days. In Beijing, only five days in January were free of smog (霧霾). What’s the difference between fog and smog?
According to scientists, fog is made up of tiny (微小的) drops of water and also ice particles (顆粒) during very cold conditions. Smog is dirty air that looks like a mixture of smoke and fog, caused mainly by smoke from cars and factories in cities.
An official for the Ministry of Environmental Protection told Beijing News that PM2.5 pollution is the main problem with air pollution. PM 2.5 refers to pollution with small particles 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter (直徑).
According to the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two main factors that cause PM 2.5 are motor vehicles and the burning of coal.
Poor air has done harm to people’s health. Children and the elderly are more at risk. A report from Beijing Children’s Hospital shows that from January 5 to January 11, 2013, half of the patients in the hospital came for respiratory (呼吸道的) problems.
To respond to the air problem, the Chinese government and many Chinese people have started to take action.
Beijing announced a plan to use clean fuel in government vehicles and plant trees. It asked citizens to set off fewer fireworks for the Spring Festival celebration. They suggested that cars with large emissions (排放) should be banned and factories should be closely watched.
Three students from No. 4 High School in Beijing wrote a report to advise to fight the air pollution. “We hope more people will join us to protect our environment. With all our efforts, the blue skies will certainly return soon,” said Shi Yucong, 15, one of the three students.

Since the 1970s, scientists have been searching for ways to connect the brain with computers. Braincomputer interface(BCI) technology could help people with disabilities send commands to machines.
Recently, two scientists, Jose Millan and Michele Tavella from the Federal Polytehnic School in Lausanne, Switzerland, show a small robotic wheelchair directed by a person’s thoughts.
In the laboratory, Tavella operated the wheelchair just by thinking about moving his left or right hand. He could even talk as he watched the vehicle and guided it with his thoughts.
“Our brain has billions of body cells(細(xì)胞). These send signals through the spinal cord(脊髓) to the body part to give us the ability to move. But spinal cord injuries(脊柱受傷) or other conditions can prevent these weak electrical signals from reaching the body part.” Tavella says. “Our system allows disabled people to communicate with outer world and also to control machines.”
The scientists designed a special cap for the user. This head cover picks up the signals from the scalp(頭皮) and sends them to a computer. The computer finds meanings of the signals and commands the wheelchair with an engine. The wheelchair also has two cameras that tell objects in its path. They help the computer react to commands from the brain.
Prof. Millan , the team leader, says scientists keep improving the computer software that finds meanings of brain signals and turns them into simple commands.” The practical possibilities that BCI technology offers to disabled people can be grouped in two kinds: communication, and controlling objects. One example is this wheelchair.”
He says his team has set two goals. One is testing with real patients, so as to prove that this is a technology they can get advantages from. And the other is sure that they can use the technology for long.

A.scalp→computer→cap→wheelchair
B.computer→cap→scalp→wheelchair

D.cap→computer→scalp→wheelchair
小題3:The team will test with real patients to_________.
A.make money from them
B.prove the technology useful to them
C.make them live longer
D.learn about their physical condition
小題4:Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A.Switzerland, the BCI research Center

Ants may be very tinny, but they’re serious eaters! Ants love a picnic and they have their “ant-picnics”.
Favorite Foods
Want to find out what the ants like to eat? Place different foods on the edge of an upside-down plate. You can use butter, honey or seeds. Put this feeding station in the places where there are lots of ants. Wait three minutes and count the number of ants feeding on each food. Count them every three minutes. Watch and find out!
Do ants prefer sweet foods or less sweet ones? Here’s test: Give ants a choice between full-strength honey and a honey-water mixture. Offer a few drops of each choice side-by-side. Then count the number of ants you see near each site every three minutes.
How Far Will They Go?
Want to see how far ants travel to collect food? First find an ant nest(巢) by following some ants when they carry food home. Now you know how far the ants traveled to your food station. Next, move the food station about one foot (30cm) farther. Keep moving it until the ants no longer show up.
Spreading the News
Once ants find food they like, usually they try to get their nestmates to help. To find out how long it takes an ant to tell others there’s food nearby, offer their favorite food and watch. After the first ant finds it, begin counting the ants at the food station every minute. Also, watch their behavior, when the first ant heads home, what does it do when it gets near other nestmates?
