【答案】

1spent the whole day

2a couple of weeks

3I don’t believe/think

4do you think she will

5He never gave a direct answer to any of our questions.

【解析】

1spend some time (in) doing sth.花費時間做某事,陳述過去發(fā)生的事情用一般過去時態(tài),故答案為spent the whole day。

2根據(jù)漢語提示可知,答案為a couple of weeks。

3此句是含有think/believe的復(fù)合句,變否定句時只能否定think/believe,從句George ever has to punish the children.是現(xiàn)在完成時態(tài),故主句為一般現(xiàn)在時態(tài),答案為I don’t believe/think。

4此句是復(fù)合句,主句為do you think,從句是陳述句的語序,從句的時態(tài)為一般將來時,故答案為do you think she will。

5陳述過去發(fā)生的事情用一般過去時態(tài),give an answer to…意思還是“給出……的答案”,句子為否定句,可以借助didn’t,也可以使用never,故答案為He never gave a direct answer to any of our questions.

【題目】I remembered Julie coming to the front of the classroom after class one autumn day in September 1976. While most of the other students hurriedly left to enjoy the pleasant weather or to relax at the student union, Julie remained to ask me questions about the next week’s exam. She had clearly already done some serious studying.

Julie never made it to the exam. The day after our conversation she was hit by a large truck as she rode a bike through a crossroads. I was sad to hear that Julie lay unconscious (昏迷的) in a hospital across town from our university.

Nurses silently came and went from Julie’s room. Her parents stood nearby quietly. Then the doctor entered the room and said to Julie’s parents and two brothers, “Your Julie has only a few hours to live.” He continued to ask, “Would you think about donating some of Julie’s organs (器官)?”

At the same time in a neighboring city, a woman called Mary was trying to see better in her small living room. Her eyes followed every movement of her lively two-year-old baby. This mother was storing up memories when she could no longer see her child. Several cities away, a young father called John was reading to his two sons in the hospital. However, he was told to have only weeks to live. His only hope was a kidney transplant (腎臟移植).

The two parents looked at each other the doctor could see tears in their eyes. “Yes. Julie had once said she wanted to donate her organs in the event of her death. Julie always gave to others while she was alive. She would like to give in death.”

Within twenty-four hours, Mary was told that she would receive one of Julie’s eyes, and John was told to start preparing for a kidney transplant. Julie’s other organs would give life to other waiting patients.

“Julie died right after her twentieth birthday. Nothing could possibly be as heartbreaking as the death of your child, says Julie’s mother. She continues, “But Julie’s life was a gift to us. Knowing that in her death, she gave the gift of life and sight to others is comforting to us.

【題目】My first full-time job after high school was selling vacation packages via the telephone for a well-known company. One day, I was put through to a man who sounded a bit out of breath. I started with my normal pitch (音高), expecting to hear the normal reply —"I don’t want any."

Instead, he spoke in a faint, weak voice and told me how he wished to take a vacation I was offering, but he couldn’t because he was dying of illness. He explained how he was lacking in oxygen then, and it took almost all his energy to answer the call. He asked if I smoked, which I did, and begged me to stop. He told me smoking was what was killing him. He told me to spend every day with my loved ones, and tell them how much I love them. At this point, I couldn’t control myself. We ended the call, but I held on my phone to prevent another call coming in so I could collect myself.

I wrote down his name and address, and sent him a card appreciating his advice and praying for him and his family. Shortly after, I received a letter from Frank, along with a picture of him and his wife. We continued to write back and forth over the next few months, and became very fond of each other. He was old enough to be my grandfather, and in many ways, I felt as if he was.

About a year later I received a letter from his wife. When I started to read, tears came to my eyes. She told me how Frank’s battle with the disease had finally come to an end, and he passed away shortly before the Christmas. She wanted to thank me for the letters to Frank, and explained how Frank touched many lives over the years. At his funeral, to show just that, they read the 1st letter I had written to Frank to show how he affected a 19-year-old he’d never met.

1The underlined part "collect myself" in the second paragraph probably means "______".

A. gather together B. comfort myself

C. relax myself D. calm down

2We can learn from the text that the author ________.

A. took down Frank’s name and address to visit him in person

B. was warmly welcomed by her customers when she called them

C. didn’t stop smoking even though Frank asked him to

D. kept in touch with Frank through letters until he died

3At Frank’s funeral the author’s 1st letter to Frank was read in order to ____.

A. encourage people to fight against disease and live bravely

B. indicate that Frank touched many people’s hearts

C. show the good relationship between Frank and the author

D. praise Frank and give thanks to the author
