完形填空。

There's always hope

I was sitting around the other mo:ming thinking albout some of my former (以前的) students. When I do that, my thoughts always turn to Vincent.

Eighteen years ago, on the first day of third grade, when I had my class write something ahout themselves, he just sat there. So I took him outside to see what was wrong. “You can ______ about something else; anything you want,” I offered. He turned to me and shouted, “I can’t write!” and threw his pencil.

Vincent was difficult and ______. He acted out. He threw things. He refused to work, to be quiet, to sit down.

So these many years later, I wondered what he was up to. With time on my hands, I googled him and looked him up on Facebook and before long I found him. And after a few texts we agreed to meet. And he told me his ______.

Vincent knew he was smart, but he also knew he couldn’t do what other kids did. He had to move around and talk. For him, sitting still, listening and reading, didn't ______. The more he tried to do the mings on his terms, the more we forced him to do the things on our terms and the angrier he got. The angrier he got, the more trouble he got into.

In other words, we _______ him.

But he woulcln’t let me tell him that. He took full responsibility for his behavior. He remembered feeling ______ for acting out.

That ______me. Kids like Vincent are always angry about something; they hold the world responsible for the concequence(后果).

This story also had one of us tuming Vincent around. But none of us did that for him. There were no excellent teachers like Annie Sullivan or Jaime Escalante. That didn’t mean we didn’t________. I remember countless conversations, trying to understand him, goirtg to his Little League games.

It was Vincent who tumed Vincent around, along with a junkie (吸毒者) house painter he worked with after failing through high school. This guy clearly scared (驚嚇) him straight; talked him into going to _______.

But it was Vincent who attended classes and got straight A’s for two years. And it was Vincent who got accepted into ten different universities, including Stanford and UW. And it was Vincent who landed a great job at a big tech company.

Vincent is completely different form 18 years ago. I coukln’t be happier for him.

And for me, the _______ is simple but powerful — there’s always hope.

It's been a long journey. From DJ to producer to singer, Mark Ronson is now a pop star in his own right.

On Feb 15, his hit song Uptown Funk won Record of the Year, one of the most important prizes, at the 2016 Grammy Awards.

While the world has gone crazy for the song, Ronson, 40, went through six difficult months to produce it. In fact, the UK musician made 17 versions (版本) of Uptown, Funk.

In an interview with the Daily Mail, Ronson told the UK newspaper that he worked so hard that his hair started to fall out. At one point, the stress of trying to come up with a suitable guitar part even caused him to f'aint (暈倒) in a restaurant.

The difficulties didn't stop there. Ronson also didn't have enough confidence in his singing, as he had been a producer for a long time. "I work with great singers," he told the New York Post, "so I've always heard what really good voices sound like. "

Still, things worked out great in the end.

His family plays an important part in his success. His stepfather guitarist Mick Jones was one of the first members of the rock band Foreigner and faometimes Jones would share ideas with Ronson.

"After school, Jones would play me the most recent mix of songs in the studio and ask what I thought, and l would tell him in my little English schoolboy voice, 'I remember the bass (貝司) was turned up a little more on the mix from last week''', Ronson told The Guardian, "I was kind of meant to live in the studio. "

All these influences led to his success. Ronson taught himself how to DJ when he was 16. "I practiced by copying my favorite DJs on the radio," he told US radio station NPR. "I would listen to them and try and copy in my best way what they were doing. "

With the goal of being a cool DJ, Ronson dropped out of New York University and played in clubs in downtown New York, where popular artists often visited.

"If you do a good job, there's the chance they might remember who you are," he told NPR.

And doing a good job is how Ronson got into show business.

" Never underestimate (低估) Ronson," UK DJ Zane Lowe told Esquire magazine, " he is fu]ly prepared for opportunities. "

1.Is Mark Ronson a pop star now?

2.What did he win on Feb 15, 2016?

3.How did he teach himself to be a DJ?

4.Where did he play after dropping out of university?

5.What made him successful?

科目:初中英語 來源:2014-2015學年北京市石景山區(qū)中考一模英語試卷(解析版) 題型:閱讀理解

Soap is more popular in liquid form than in bars in the UK – but there are good reasons to stick with the old traditional way of keeping clean, says Gareth Rubin.

According to market research company Mintel, 87% of

Britons usually buy liquid soap, compared to only 13% who buy bars of it. And solid soap is losing the popularity. But why do some people still prefer traditional solid soap?

1.It’s what they’ve always known.

Some people are just traditionalists. According to Mark Constantine, he thinks it’s always lovely when we’re using something that’s been about for 3, 000 years. Solid soap has got a huge history and they’re very beautiful.

2.Solid soap is more pleasant.

Smelling a plastic bottle doesn’t feel very comfortable, while you can get bars of different textures and smells – some bars have sea salt, nuts, fruits or flowers in them for a bit of a surprise. Others come in beautiful or even funny shapes and sizes. You can tie attractive bars of soap up in silk ribbons (絲帶) and present them as a gift to a loved one – the effect isn’t quite the same when you do this with a liquid soap.

3.Less packaging (包裝) is better for the planet.

All those bottles has to come from somewhere and go somewhere. Recycling can only do so much, whereas typically a bar of soap comes in a little paper wrapper and that’s it. If you care about the environment, you can even buy bars of soap without paper around them. “And about 60% of the cost of a bottle of soap goes on the packaging and the pump (泵頭).” says Constantine.

4.The bottles are a little bit difficult.

You can hold a bar of soap in one hand and it works. With the bottles you first have to use both hands to unlock the pump, and shut your eyes to the liquid slowly dropping the sticky thing onto your bathroom floor. When the bar of soap runs down, you can still use it until it is no more, but with the liquid soap it is a difficult task to get the last drop out of the bottom.

1.According to market research company Mintel, ______.

A.solid soap is as popular as liquid soap

B.more people refuse to buy liquid soap

C.solid soap is becoming less popular

D.solid soap is better for the planet

2.Compared to solid soap, liquid soap ______.

A.has less packaging

B.has a much longer history

C.is more pleasant in smells

D.has less funny shapes and sizes

3.What can you infer from the passage?

A.Liquid soap is not worth the price according to Constantine.

B.A bottle of liquid soap cannot be a present for a friend.

C.More people will buy solid soap without silk ribbons.

D.It’s impossible to use up the liquid soap in a bottle.

4.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.People’s preference to soap is changing.

B.Liquid soap is still liked by many Britons.

C.The advantages and disadvantages of solid soap.

D.The reasons why some people still prefer solid soap.
