One way that scientists (科學(xué)家) learn about man is by studying animals. In this lab, the scientists are studying the relationship between diet and health.

They are studying the relationship between the amount (數(shù)量) of food the mice eat and their health. The mice are in three groups. All three groups are receiving the same healthy food. The first group is eating one cup of food each day, the second group is eating two cups, and the third group is eating three cups.

After three years, the healthiest group is the one that is only eating one cup of food each day.The mice in this group are a little thinner. But they are more active. Most of the day, they are running, playing with one another. Also, they are living longer.Mice usually live for two years. Most of the mice in this group are still alive after three years.

The second group of mice is healthy, too. They are active, but not as active as the thinner mice. They are only living about two years.

The last group of mice is receiving more food than the other two groups. Most of the day, these mice are eating or sleeping. They are not very active. These mice are living longer than the scientists thought-about a year and a half. But they are not healthy. They are sick more often than the other two groups.

閱讀下面短文,從每題所給的四個(gè)選項(xiàng)(A、B、C和D)中,選出最佳選項(xiàng)。

Lake Victoria is the largest lake in AfricA. It is also the second largest lake in the world. It is an important lake because it is one of the sources(源頭) for the longest river in the world, the Nile River.Lake Victoria provides a source of water, food, and power for several African countries.Lake Victoria is a big part of African life.

Unfortunately, Lake Victoria has a problem. It is shrinking. There are several power stations at Lake Victoria in Uganda. These are on the Nile River, and besides producing power, they keep the water of the lake at a certain level. For the past forty years, that level has been 11.9 meters.Over the last several years, the water level has dropped by about 2.5 meters. There seem to be several reasons for this drop.

One possible reason is drought(干旱).Drought has been very bad in the area since 2000.Lake Victoria gets all of its water from rain, so the drought means less water in the lake.

However, some environmentalists believe that the real problem is the power plants(factories) on Lake Victoria. Uganda depends on those power plants for most of its power, and they made the power plants larger in 2000.Many people believe the power plants have been taking too much water off Lake Victoria. As a result, they have been asked to use less water until Lake Victoria goes back to its old level.

Whether the low water level is caused by drought or power plants, the result is the same. This is already a poor area of Africa, where many people live a really hard life.People, animals and plants around Lake Victoria will suffer even more from low water levels on the lake. Many people need Lake Victoria for fishing or growing food. Fish need the water to live, and animals need it for water.Plants around the lake will die without the water, and then more animals and people will suffer.Unless the lake fills soon, many people will suffer and die.

1.Lake Victoria is __________.

A. an important lake in Africa.

B. the largest lake in the world.

C. the source of water, food and power for America.

A. It is becoming larger.

B. It is becoming more beautiful.

C. It is becoming smaller.

D. It is becoming more useful.

3.The water level of Lake Victoria is now __________.

A. 2.5 meters

B. 11.9 meters

C. 14.4 meters

D. 9.4 meters

4.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

A. Rain water is the only source for the lake.

B. There has been little rain in the lake area since 2000.

C. The power plants in Uganda provide water for the lake.

D The power plants in Uganda were made larger in 2000.

5.According to the passage, how can we solve the problems around Lake Victoria?

A. People must build more power plants.

B. More sources of water must be found.

C. Every country should offer some money to Africa.

D. All the people living in the area should move to another place.

任務(wù)型閱讀 閱讀下面的短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容完成表格中所缺信息,每空限填一詞。

Lightning is one of the most beautiful natural phenomena (現(xiàn)象). It is also one of the most deadly phenomena. A bolt of lightning is six times hotter than the surface (表面) of the sun and gives out 30, 000 amps of electricity (電). It can travel at 100, 000 kilometers per hour and has the ability to hit a target up to 40 kilometers away. About 1,000 people around the world are killed by lightning every year.

Only about ten percent of people struck (擊中) by lightning will actually die, but the others are actually very badly injured (受傷), with burns, broken bones, blindness, deafness, paralysis, or memory loss. However, when the electricity passes through their brains (大腦), it can occasionally have unusual and even positive effects (積極作用). Some blind (瞎的) people have got their sight back after being struck by lightning. One woman said a psychological test showed her intelligence (智力) had greatly improved (提高) and one man said he could no longer feel cold at all and could go out in temperature below zero in just a T-shirt!

So what should you do to stay safe in a thunderstorm? The most important rule is to stay inside, but do not go near phones, electrical appliances, plumbing or water. If you are struck outside, do not take shelter under a tree. Instead, roll (卷) yourself up into a ball on the ground as small as possible. And do not think it has to be raining in order for lightning to strike.

Strangely, lightning seems to prefer (偏愛) some people to others. If you are a man, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than a woman!
