1.We have always been warned of the dangers of the forest fires. They cause     1   to a forest. They kill many plants and animals in an eco-system, which is a group of living things and their environment. But have you ever heard of a forest fire that can be     2    for a forest?
2.People start some of the fires with special reasons to actually do well to the eco-system.
3.In fact, fires are a natural part of any eco-system. Without fires, the oldest and largest trees would stop sunlight from reaching the forest floor. Fires can       3      some of these old trees. When the trees die, they provide something good for the earth. New trees can grow strong and healthy in their place.
4.Some trees even need fires to grow. These trees hold their seeds(種子) inside. Heats from a fire allow the coat of the seeds to open up. Then the seeds fall to the ground and have the 4 to grow.
5.Scientists, who know about nature’s needs, start some of these fires, called controlled burns. A fire is started and kept under control. This way, the fire does not spread out of the area or 5   a large space of the forest. Fires can be dangerous for animals. Even when animals continue to live after forest fires, they can go hungry   6    their food has been damaged in the fire. Small, controlled fires mean that animals will not have to move far to find food. After some time, small plants begin to grow. Animals return soon after the plants return. This   7 makes an eco-system.
6.So the next time you hear about a forest fire, think about the good as well as the bad. It may take a new eco-system a while to return, but it will likely come back stronger and healthier than ever.

小題2:But have you ever heard of a forest fire that can be     for a forest? People start some of the fires with a special reasons to actually do good to the eco-system.第一段講森林火災(zāi)的危害,然后用but表示轉(zhuǎn)折,另外第二段講述do good to the eco-system森林火災(zāi)對(duì)生態(tài)系統(tǒng)帶來(lái)的好處,所以選helpful有幫助的。
小題3:Without fires, the oldest and largest trees would stop sunlight from reaching the forest floor. Fires can       some of these old trees. 小題5:This way, the fire does not spread out of the area or   a large space of the forest. 第五段講述了“控制性燃燒的林火不會(huì)超越控制區(qū)域或占據(jù)很大的空間”,而新世紀(jì)英語(yǔ)中有這樣的詞組“cover an area of…占地面積…… ”,所以選cover。
小題6:They can go hungry        their food has been damaged in the fire.這題比較簡(jiǎn)單,因?yàn)槭澄镌诹只鹬性馐芷茐,所以?dòng)物們要挨餓。所以選because。
小題7:After some time, small plants begin to grow. Animals return soon after the plants return. This     makes an eco-system.

Very hot weather is common in many parts of the world. Although hot weather just makes most people hot, it can cause medical problems and death.
Floods, storms and other terrible natural events kill thousands of people every year. And we hear much about them in news reports. We general hear little about heat, which experts say may be nature’s most dangerous killer.
Health experts say that since the year 1900, very hot weather has killed more people in the United States than any other natural event. One year--- the unusually hot summer of 1980 heat caused about 1,700 deaths in the United States. In 1995, more than 600 people died in another heat wave in one city----Chicago, Illinois.
Besides drinking lots of cool water , doctors say there are some other things to do to protect against the health dangers of heat. Stay out of the sun, if possible. Wear loose and light—colored clothes. Wear a hat while in the sun. Eat fewer hot and heavy foods. And, when possible, cook foods during cooler time of the day. If possible, rest more often.

You want to know about my staying in America, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience to study here.
In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.
When I first studied English, I was told to say,” I am fine” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good” or “I’m tired”.
One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?” It made me confused . I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say.
Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.
To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan(曬黑). However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter”.
I was also surprised by how hardworking US students are.  In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.
The kids here are so talented, I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.
小題1: What does the word “confused” in the fourth paragraph mean in Chinese ?
A.困惑B.憧憬C.悲痛D.后悔
小題2:A good US student spends his / her time ______ .
A.only in doing homework
B.on studies, sports or music and public work
C.only in working for the public
D.only on sports or music
小題3:Which of the following is NOT true ?
A.The writer is now in US.
B.American girls love to have white skin.
C.US students are talented and hard working.
D.The writer regrets that he gave up playing the piano.
