A desert is a large land of sand. There is very little rain and not many plants. The size and the place of the world’s deserts are always changing. In recent a hundred years, deserts have become more and more. That’s mainly because of men. In the nineteenth century, some people brought a kind of little animal called rabbit to Australia from England. Today there are millions of them. They eat every plant they see. So the great desert in the center of Australia is becoming bigger.
There are places in North Africa where great cities once stood. There were gardens and trees and grass. But now these places are deserts. Scientists studied the land to find out what happened. Many of them thought the land died when the trees had been cut down.
Trees help other plants grow. And they keep the earth from blowing away. In forests, leaves on the ground keep rain water from running off.
Men can make deserts, but they can also stop them from getting bigger. For example,in China, the Great Green Wall has been built and it has already saved a lot of land. But more “Great Green Wall” are still needed all over the world. Can we stop deserts from getting bigger and save the land? Yes,we can. And we must.
