30th September
Dear Jayne,  
　　How are you? I hope everything is getting on well with you.  
　　I returned to my home on the morning of September 28th, at 2 am. I am so
sorry for not calling you as soon as I came back home.  
　　I have been allowed to stay at home for two days (from September 29th to
September 30th) to have a rest. The Chinese National Day is on October 1st. We
have a seven-day off for National Day holiday.  I will stay at home to have a
good rest.  
　　Thank you for your help.  I miss you and your kindness.  I miss the climate
in England in summer, too.  It is neither too hot nor too cold.  Now it is still very
hot in most parts of China, especially in the south of China, for example, in
Guangzhou.  The sun seems to dry up everything. We have to use air conditioner
to make the air cool enough so that we can have a good sleep at night.  
　　I will continue my work on October 8th.  After I start my work, it will be
too busy for me to do anything that I want to do, but I will try my best to get in
touch with you.

Henry was a carpenter（木匠）of our village. Once I asked him to make a dining table for my wife. He made it just the right size to fill the space between the two windows. When I arrived home that evening, Henry was drinking a cup of tea and writing out his bill for his work.。

My wife said to me，quietly , “ That’s his ninth cup of tea today . ” But she said loudly, “It’s a beautiful table，dear，isn’t it?”

“I won’t decide about that until I see that bill.” I said.

“Yes. Hotter一and more expensive. Dining tables will be 20 more expensive on June 30th , won’t they , Henry?”

Henry looked hard at me for half a minute. There was a little smile in his two blue eyes. I gave his bill back to him.

“If it isn’t too much trouble , Henry , ” I said , “ Please add it up again. You can forget the date.”

I paid him 26. 50 and he was happy to get it.

We got to the clean, lovely city of Yangzhou early in the morning. This is our first trip to China. All the different smells attract our attention to the local food. We are going to try something special for dinner tonight. The hotel we are staying in is not expensive but very clean. We plan to stay here for a few days, visit some places in the city, and then travel to the Great Wall in the north.

We visited the famous Slender West Lake (瘦西湖) which was crowded with visitors from all over the world, and bought a lot of toys for our friends outside the gate of the park. Our trip to the Great Wall was long and boring. We visited a small village in the mountains. People in the village love the quiet life. They are the kindest people I had ever met. They always smile and say “Hello”. Ralph and I can speak only a few words in Chinese, so smiling is the best way to show our kindness.
