【題目】Recently, a 17yearold girl named Cassandra Hsiao becomes hot in the world. Living in California, the girl has received offer letters(錄取通知書(shū)) from all eight Ivy League colleges(常春藤名校), including Harvard, Princeton and Yale.
Cassandra's father came from Taiwan while her mother was from Malaysia(馬來(lái)西亞). She was born in Malaysia, and her family moved to the United States when she was five. The family suffered a lot in the new country. Luckily, Cassandra works hard all the time. Cassandra wrote their stories on their hard struggles(奮斗) in the college essay, which was really touching the world.
“Your personal identity(個(gè)人身份) and sense of belonging(歸屬感) are two of the most important problems that people from other countries must face. I wanted to share a piece of our home life, my relationship with my mother and both of our stories,” she told BBC News.
“I miss Malaysia. Growing up, I loved flying kites, going to markets and setting off firecrackers(煙火). I spent my childhood talking in a mixture of Chinese, Malaysia and English,” she said lovingly.
It's difficult to deal with language difficulties. Once her mother was laughed at by her teacher and classmates for using wrong English in an English paper. But a kind girl stood up and argued with the classmates. She fought them back and help my mother correct her language mistakes.
“Later my mother asked me to teach her proper English starting with pronunciation. It has not been easy. I believe this article really shows values I hold close to my heart: Standing up for those without a voice, even when you think you haven't quite found your own yet,” said Cassandra.

【題目】In China, mung bean soup (綠豆湯) is an usual food to cool yourself in summer. But in 2010, your family might not make so much mung bean soup because of its high price. The price of the mung bean is now more than 20 yuan per kilo. That is more expensive than pork(豬肉)! Last year, mung beans cost only 6 yuan per kilo
What caused the price rise? Experts say there are several reasons.
First, there is a smaller mung bean supply in 2010. There was a drought in North-east China in 2009. It is China’s main producing area of bean. The drought stopped the beans from growing. Also, some other crops such as corn, wheat and rice sold well last year. So many farmers chose to grow those crops instead of mung beans. As a result, there are fewer beans on the market this year.
Second, there are more requirements for mung beans in the market. From January to March, our country’s crop export(出口) went up by 22 per cent from the last three months. That includes the export of mung beans. For example, 90 percent of mung beans in Japan market now come from China. And these days people are paying more and more attention to healthy eating habits, so they are eating more mung beans.
Another reason is that some sellers are buying a large number of mung beans from farmers. But they are not selling them to people. They store the mung beans. When the market is short of mung beans, the price goes up. Then people who have been storing mung beans can sell them at a higher price.
But you don’t have to worry that you cannot drink much mung bean soup to cool yourself this summer. There are other drinks that are good to drink on hot days, such as green tea, lemonade and fruit juice. And when fewer people want to buy mung beans, the price will go down at last.
根據(jù)材料內(nèi)容選擇最佳答案,并將其標(biāo)號(hào)填入填入提前括號(hào)內(nèi)。

【題目】In the United States, sometimes when one becomes rich, he wants everyone to know it. And even if he does not become very rich, he wants people to think that he is. That is what “keeping up with the Joneses” is about. It is a story of someone who tried to look as rich as his neighbors.
The expression was first used in1913 by a young American called Arthur Momand. He told this story about himself. He began earning $125 a week at the age of 23, and that was a lot of money in those days. He got married and moved with his wife to a very wealthy neighborhood outside New York City. When he saw rich people riding horses, Momand went horse-riding every day. When he saw that the rich had servants, Momand and his wife also hired a servant and gave big parties for their new neighbors.
It was like a race, but one could never finish this race because another one was always trying to keep up. The race ended when Momand and his wife finally found that they could no longer pay for their new way of life and had to move back to an old apartment in New York City.
Momand looked around him and noticed that many people do such things just to keep up with rich lifestyle of their neighbors. He saw the funny side of it and started to write a series(系列)of short novels, and he called it “Keeping up with the Joneses” because “Jones” is a very common name in the United States. “Keeping up with the Joneses” came to mean keeping up with rich lifestyle of the people around you. Since then, Momand’s series came out in different newspapers across the country for over 28 years.

【題目】China covers large areas and has a great population. Different living habits have always been an interesting topic in the country. Recently, another difference between southern Chinese and northern Chinese became a hot one: The way people shop at markets.
People from southern China say that they always buy what they need for just one or two meals. It is normal for them to buy half of a Chinese cabbage, two potatoes and 0.25 kilograms of beef at a time.
However, one may be laughed at if he does this in the north. Instead, buying vegetables and meat enough for a week is usual. Also, you can buy a small amount(數(shù)量) of fruit, such as a single apple or pear, each time in the south. Shop owners even help you peel and cut them. But shop owners in the north hardly offer such service. And many fruits are sold in baskets and boxes.
The difference could be due to the different weather.
Food can be kept for a long time in the north, as it is usually cold and dry there. Many northern Chinese have the habit of storing food, especially for the long winter. But the hot and wet weather in the south makes southern Chinese buy just enough food for one meal or one day, or else the food may go bad.
【1】In southern China, people usually buy at a time.
A. a small amount of food
B. a large amount of food
C. enough food for a week
