"Hello"-it's one of the first words we learn as babies, yet it's one of the last ones we think to use as adults. That's regrettable(令人遺憾的) , because saying hello is more than just saying hello-it is the respect of another's worth. How might the world change-how might we change-if we used this word well? To find out, l spent one month saying hello to every person I met. Here's what I've learned.
It can improve productivity. In one of the few studies ever done on this subject, Allan Allday, an assistant professor(副教授)of special education at Oklahoma State University, had middle school teachers greet their students individually (單獨(dú)地) each morning. This exchange of greetings raised the kids' productivity. School went from impersonal to personal (富有人情味的) , and that led to more class participation(參與) and better grades.
Environments influence friendliness, One study found that people in the city were less likely to shake hands with a stranger than those in the countryside. And researchers say, pleasure environments generally encourage more smiles and hellos than unpleasant ones. My experience was similar. Whatever the reason, my hellos were answered far less often than the ones in the countryside. Similarly, people in vacation areas, like the Jersey Shore, were far friendlier than those hurrying to work in the centre of the city.
It's a form of health insurance(保險(xiǎn)). It's impossible to say hello without smiling. And smiling has been shown to lower blood pressure(血壓) , make people feel happier and improve happiness. It seems that saying hello creates a similar influence.
So maybe we can make the world a better place by saying hello. After a month of doing it. I feel lighter and more connected and I have a better sense of well-being.

A. People can say hello since they are born

A. Students will get good grades by saying hello very often.
B. An assistant professor likes greeting his students every morning.
C. The teacher who often says hello to students is very popular at school.
D. Kids will be more active in class by exchanging greetings with teachers.
3.From the passage, we learn that_______.
A. smiles can take the place of hellos
B. people living in the city refuse to say hello
C. environments play a role in creating friendliness
D. having health insurance is more important than saying hello
4.The underlined word "well-being" in the last paragraph means_______.
A. health and happiness

My Year Abroad
This month in Travelers Corner there are three teenagers’ experiences in year-abroad programmes.
Mariko Okada – Tokyo
My year abroad in the United States was a fantastic experience. I’m not a shy person, and I was very comfortable speaking to everyone. So I got lots of speaking practice. I also learned lots of interesting things about American culture. When I got home, my friends all said that I had improved so much! I hope to go back again in the future.
Carla Fonseca – Rio de Janeiro
I spent last year studying English in London. I’m from a small town, and London is a very big city. Sometimes I felt it was too big. There were so many people to talk to, but I always felt bad about my English. I missed my family, and I really missed my two cats. My roommate was always using our telephone, so I hardly had the chance for a nice long talk with my parents. I think it was a good experience for me, but I’m glad to be home!
Alvin Chen – Hong Kong
Studying in New Zealand was a fun experience for me, but it was also lots of hard work! I had English classes six hours a day, five days a week——with lots of homework. I also kept a diary of my experience. I like to write, and I wrote two or three pages in my diary every day. On Saturdays, my homestay family took me to lots of interesting places and showed me so many wonderful things about the culture. I’m really glad I went!
1.All the three teenagers went abroad .
A. to study English B. to visit friends
C. to have a holiday D. to find a job
2.Who didn’t really enjoy the stay in a foreign country very much?
A. Mariko. B. Carla.
C. Alvin. D. None of them.
3.Travelers Corner is most probably .
A. a sports club newsletter
B. a science documentary
C. a travel magazine
D. a news website
