There was once a very wide tree in South Africa. 60 people could stand in its hollow trunk(空心樹干). The tree reached over 18 meters into the sky and it was more than 1, 100 years old. But recently, that tree and others like it have died.1.
The tree was a baobab(猴面包樹). Baobab trees grow in Africa and are called"the Tree of Life”.
Baobab trees usually live a long time. One of the oldest stood for more than 2, 400 years.
2.They noticed that nine of the thirteen oldest baobab trees and five of the six largest died in the following 12 years.
Stephan Woodborne, one of the six scientists, says more research(研究)is needed to know why the trees died.3.That's because the trees clearly weren't sick. Besides, many were in national parks, so they were protected from human activities. They believe that increasing temperatures and changing rainy seasons have made it harder for baobabs to live.
"The big ones and the old ones caught the attention of people, Woodborne says. "But it's not just those. 4.People should be more environment-friendly. It is one way to help protect baobabs and other trees from the effects of climate change, according to Woodborne. 5.
“We need to think about the way we live our lives. "Woodborne says. "If we all change what we do a little bit, it will start to make a difference.”
A.That could mean using less energy(能源) and making less waste(廢料), when possible.
B.Smaller and younger baobabs are dying too.
C.However, they think climate change may be the main reason.
D.Scientists are wondering why.
E.In 2005, scientists began a research to find out the age of more than 60 baobabs.

When the bell rings, every student takes out an iPad. The light from the screens makes their young faces pretty and lively. That’s what happens every day at my school in the US. We use iPads in class.
I felt surprised and excited when I got an iPad the first day I arrived at the school. But it was not free. I spent about $100 to rent (租) it for three years.
Every iPad at my school has a special learning system (系統(tǒng)) called Focus. Teachers put their teaching materials like textbooks and PPTs on it. When we have classes, we enter the system and download (下載) the materials with our iPads.
It makes the classes interesting and efficient (高效的). For example, a few weeks ago, we learned about London in the UK. Our teacher prepared a video in which we saw many places of interest in London. We could not only watch the video, but also see the words at the same time. Because of the video, I know more about the city.
We also do our homework with iPads. We can know how well we do our homework right after we submit (提交) our homework.
However, there are still some bad points about learning with iPads. Some of my classmates play games or surf the Internet in class.
I believe the key to use iPads well is to have good self-control (自制), isn’t it?
1.In the writer’s class, every student ________.
A.gets a free iPad from the teacher B.plays games on iPads in each class
C.shares an iPad with their classmates in class D.rents an iPad to use at school for three years
2.The underlined word “Focus” is ________.
A.the name of the iPad at school B.PPTs and videos
C.teachers’ teaching materials D.a special learning system
3.According to the example in Paragraph 4, we learn that________.
A.students don’t like to use iPads in class B.iPads are not useful when having classes
C.students use iPads to watch videos every class D.iPads make the classes interesting and efficient
4.What does the writer think of using iPads in school?
A.Students should use iPads as often as possible.
B.To use iPads in school is very bad for students’ eyes.
C.Students should have good self-control when using iPads.
D.All students should use iPads to surf the Internet in class.

What will man be like in the future — in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now? We can only make a guess, of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today. For man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an example. Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today. Now, on the average, men are about three inches taller. Five hundred years is a relatively (相對地) short period of time, so we may suppose that man will continue to grow taller.
Again, in the modern world we use our brains a great deal. Even so, we still make use of only about 20% of the brain's capacity (容量.) As time goes on, however, we shall have to use our brains more and more and finally we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change too. The head, especially the forehead, will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are being used too much. In fact, we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we tend (有…的趨勢) to make less use of our arms and legs. These, as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive (敏感的) because they are used a great deal in modern life.
What about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both men and women are probably to be hairless!
Perhaps, all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive (有吸引力的) person to look at! This may well be true. All the same, besides these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us. He will still be a human being, with thoughts and feelings similar to our own.
1.Future man is probably to be different from us in ________ ways.
A. two B. three C. four D. five
2.Future man’s head will grow larger because ________.
A. he will use his brain more and more as time goes on
B. he makes use only 80% of the brain's capacity
C. the other 80% of his brain will grow faster
D. his brain has grown larger over the past centuries
3.What will be probably TRUE about the man in the future?
A. He will have smaller eyes and will wear better glasses.
B. His fingers will grow weaker because he won't use them.
C. He will be hairless because hair is no longer useful.
D. He will think and feel in a different way.
4.What does the writer write the article for?
A. To give us some knowledge of future man.
B. To show that man's life will be different in the future.
C. To let us know future man will become shorter.
D. To tell us future man will not use legs.
