Some people think that the debate (辯論) about school uniforms is just about whether students look cool. In fact, this problem is connected with other topics, such as student performance (表現), money, and personal choice. The school uniform debate is very important to parents, teachers, and school officials—and to students, too! Many students argue (爭論) that school uniforms would save their parents' money. According to Nahla, an eighth-grader, "Kids whose families don't have a lot of money wouldn't be teased for their unfashionable clothes." Besides, some students think that uniforms would help them give much attention to learning. "I think it's a great idea.

Wearing uniforms would teach students that schoolwork is more important than looking good," argues tenth-grader, Heba. Others believe that school uniforms would help students study better. In the words of a twelfth-grader named Aziza, "If all students have to wear the same uniform, they will try to impress others with their schoolwork and grades, not their clothes." Some students are against school uniforms. They argue that uniforms would cost their parents more money. "Uniforms are expensive and can only be worn at school. My parents would still have to buy me other clothes to wear on weekends and after school," explains ninth-grader, Sherine. According to a twelfth-grader named Susan, "School uniforms don't allow personal choice." She feels that uniforms don't allow students to be creative or express their own decisions about what to wear. Finally, many students like eleventh grader Reema say that uniforms are uncomfortable. "Students like to wear comfortable clothes," she says.

In a word, there are strong arguments on both sides of the school uniform debate. Whateverthe result is, one thing is important: before making a decision about whether to require uniforms, school officials must consider the opinions of everyone—especially the students.

1978—1988: New Look

In a 1978 Japanese documentary(記錄片) China’s New Look, there was a scene showing Chinese people’ life back then. In front of an old-fashioned TV set, some Shanghainese gathered around to watch a TV show. In 1981, only one out of every 170 city families in China had a color TV.

1988—1998: ▲

In October 1990, the first McDonald’s on the Chinese mainland opened for business in Shenzhen. It quickly became the hottest tourist spot(旅游景點). “Many Chinese customers waited in line and shouted to the shop assistant , “I want 10 Big Macs,” recalled a waiter at McDonald’ s at that time.

1998—2008: Here Comes WTO

For many Chinese, the year 2001 was very unforgettable. It marked the start of a new millennium(一千年) and led to a whole new era(時代) as China joined the World Trade Organization(WTO). From 2001 to 2017, China’s average(平均) growth of the import(進口) of goods and services was more than twice the world’s average.

2008—2018：New Beginning

Shanghai, a city of long-time business culture, is always a step ahead in China’s foreign trade. With the successful hosting of China’s first import expo(展覽會) in November 2018, the city went on to develop China’s import business. The expo will be remembered as a new beginning for China’s import history.
