【題目】
Peter was the best table tennis player in his school and hardly ever lost a match. He hated losing anything. When he won, he would feel really good. If he lost, he would feel terrible. It seemed to Peter that losing was the worst thing in the world.
A new kid, Albert, came to Peter’s school. He was good at table tennis, too. Soon there would be a match between Peter and Albert. Peter worked hard to get ready for the match, but Albert didn’t seem to think much of it. When the match began, Albert was a real player. There was always a smile on his face, while Peter looked serious all the time. Peter thought it was so important to win the match that he even wanted to cheat, but he lost in the end.
“You played very well, Peter. I think we can play again sometime,” said Albert.
But Peter didn’t feel happy and couldn’t fall asleep that night.
One day, Peter saw Albert playing basketball. Though he lost again and again, the happy smile never left his face. Peter found Albert was great at table tennis but bad at basketball. However, he enjoyed both of them.
Whether he won or lost the game, Albert enjoyed it. Peter came to realize that enjoying a game was much more important than winning or losing it. He felt happier than ever before.

【題目】In the days before electricity, people don’t worry much about sleep. They usually went to bed a couple of hours after sunset (日落) and woke at sunrise. After all, there wasn’t much to do in those days after the sun went down. But then came the electric light bulb (電燈泡). And now we have satellite television, the Internet,24-hour convenience stores, and longer hours at work. How much can we sleep? How much should we sleep?
Like it or not, many of us are sleeping less on average (平均). In 1910, most Americans slept 9 hours a night. That dropped to 7.5 hours by 1975. In 2002, a study by the National Sleep Foundation found that the average American got only 6.9 hours. The news is even worse for people who work the night shift. They sleep an average of just 5 hours.
Are we sleeping enough? Not if you believe in the old rule of eight hours of rest, eight hours of work, and eight hours of play. On the other hand, Norman Stanley, a British scientist who studies sleep, believes people’s sleep needs are different. Some people need as many as 11 hours, but others need as few as three. How much do you really need? “To find out,” he says, “simply sleep until you wake naturally, without the help of an alarm clock. That’s your sleep need.”
Meanwhile, other scientists and researchers are searching for new ways to keep us awake longer. Some are developing chemicals (化學藥品) that are safer and more powerful than caffeine, the chemical found in coffee and tea. One experimental drug, CX717, kept laboratory monkeys working happily for 36 hours. Further developments may allow people to safely stay awake for several days straight. One group of researchers is studying a gene (基因) found in some fruit flies that lets them get by on one-third the usual amount of sleep. Another group is even working on an electric switch that immediately wakes up a sleeping brain.
The meanings of this research are huge. On the one hand, this could lead to a world where we work longer and longer hours with less and less sleep. On the other hand, if we needed less sleep, we would have more free time to travel, read, volunteer, and spend time with family.
【1】How many hours did most Americans sleep a night in 1975?
A. 5. B. 6.9. C. 7.5. D. 9.
【2】What can we learn from the passage?
A. People have got enough sleep. B. People will work longer hours.
C. Sleep time will be a big problem. D. Staying awake for long is possible.
【3】What is probably the best title of the passage?
A. To sleep or Not to sleep? B. How can We Sleep Longer?
C. To Work or Not to Work? D. How Much We can Sleep?

Rooftop Gardens
Have you ever seen a rooftop garden—
a garden on the top of a roof? Many people are
finding it good for the environment and good for
themselves.
Cities can be as much as 4—10 degrees
warmer than the countryside. Green rooftops
can actually help cool the air in cities. A single green roof will not do much to change the temperature of a city. However, when more buildings begin to change their rooftops into green spaces, it makes a real difference. Buildings that are cooler also use air conditioning less often. This reduces the amount of energy a building uses, which is good for the environment. Cities are usually more polluted than other areas. Plants on rooftops can even help clean the air. Gardens in the city can also provide a place for birds and bugs to live in.
One unusual rooftop garden is located above Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. The garden covers an area of 7, 500 square feet. The garden has flowers, fountains (噴泉),even a goldfish pond, and also paths that children can walk on in slippers or with bare feet. It is used as a place for the children and their parents to relax and be close to nature without leaving the hospital. Another interesting garden is on the rooftop of the Royal York Hotel in Toronto, Canada. A large vegetable garden has been planted on the roof. The hotel’s chefs (廚師)can pick fresh vegetables from the roof.
Now not all buildings have rooftop gardens. One reason is that rooftop gardens can be more expensive than traditional rooftops. However, they may save on heating and cooling bills in the future. Also, a roof needs to be flat and strong enough to support the weight of the garden.
Some people may not know about rooftop gardens and how good they can be for the environment. But word is starting to get out. You may want to keep your eyes on the skies when you walk in your town or city. You never know when you might find a secret garden many feet above the ground.
【1】What is a rooftop garden?
【2】What is the second paragraph mainly about?
【3】What is the rooftop garden in Children’s Hospital in St. Louis used as?
【4】Why is the rooftop garden of the Royal York Hotel interesting?
【5】Why don’t all buildings have rooftop gardens?
