Names

Everybody in the world has one name at least. And to each person his name is important because it is his own.

Remember how you don't like it very much if people can't remember your name, or pronounce it wrong? Remember how you like to see it printed in the newspaper or even on the blackboard at school? That's because it is your own and only you can have it.

Of course, names aren't important in themselves. There are no “good” names or “bad” names. But they are useful in our life. You don't have to go around shouting!

“Hey, You!”or “Hello. Girl-with-the-red-hair.”or “Thank you, Man-who-lives-at-the-end-of-the-street.” Wouldn't it be foolish?

A person's name means something. For example. John or Nathan means “present”. James or Jacob means “he follows after.” Frank means “free”. Charles has “strong” in meaning. Thomas is a word for “twin”. Girls'names mean something, too. If you know a Mary or a Miriam, her name means “star of the sea.” Helen means “l(fā)ight”. Rebecca, “very beautiful”. Rhoda is a “rose”.

Now first names are all we need when we've at home. For it isn't very often that two sisters or two brothers have the same first name. But it's different when you go out to play or go to school. You may have a lot of Johns and Davids and Sues. You could get all mixed up and not know who was who. That's why last names started. And last names are really nicknames(綽號).

It happened like this: There was a certain Richard. Since his father's name was James, he was called “Richard, son of James.” And later just Richard Jameson.

The place where they lived gave some people their last names. For example, Mr Short was talking about Joseph.

  “Which Joseph?” someone might ask.

“Why, the Joseph who lives in the field.”

And right then that Joseph had a last name: Joseph Field. You can think of many more last names that started that way.

1.You like your name ________.

[ ]

A.because people can't remember it

B.because it is important

C.when others give the wrong pronunciation

D.when it is printed in the newspaper or written ca the blackboard

2.Names are ________.

[ ]

B.useful in our life

C.good or bad

D.foolish

3.Sometimes a person's name means something, for example, ________.

[ ]

A.John is “strong”

B.Mary means “star of the sea”

C.Charles is a “present”

D.Helen is a word of “happiness”

4.Last names started because ________.

[ ]

A.two brothers or two sisters have the same first names

B.you often go out to play or go to school

C.if you aren't at home, you may meet a lot of Johns, Davids or Sues

D.you don't know everybody outside

5.How does a last name come from?

[ ]

A.The Joseph lives in the field. He is called Joseph Field.

B.His father is called Jameson so his son becomes Jameson.

C.The place where Mr Short lives often gives people the same name.

D.People like to give others nickname.

任務型閱讀。
假設你是餐館的經理Mr Price,讀了顧客Raymond Yuen 寫給你的投訴信,F給他回一封email,
對他的投訴作出回應。下面是投訴信原文:
An e-mail to complain
Here is an e-mail with a complaint from
An unhappy customer in Canada.
To:                           manager@tastytreat.com.ca
Date:                        Monday, 7 October, 3.34p.m.
From:                       raymondyuen@canada.net
Subject:                    Complaint
Dear Mr Price,
I have eaten in your restaurant many times and have always been happy with the food and service. This
makes what happened last Saturday even more disappointing.
It was my son's birthday so we booked a no-smoking table at your restaurant for 7.30p.m. We arrived
on time but were told that our table was not yet ready. At 8.00p.m.,we were given a table in the smoking
section. I asked to move but I was told that there were no other tables. A lot of people were smoking so it
was uncomfortable and unhealthy.
Our first waitress, Janet, was very polite and helpful. She gave us free drinks for waiting so long. Our
food also came quickly and looked fresh and tasty. When my wife had eaten most of her meal, she found
a dead cockroach (蟑螂) in her vegetables. She was shocked and wanted to leave. At first, the waitress
told us it was a piece of garlic (蒜). When we told her that garlic does not have legs, she apologized (道歉)
and took the food away. We asked for the bill, expecting not to pay for my wife's meal. Nobody came.
After 15 minutes, I asked to see the manager. The head waiter told us that you were on holiday. I
complained again about the horrible cockroach. He told me Janet had finished work. He didn't believe my
story and gave me a bill for three meals. I argued with him but was made to pay.
The waitress, Janet, was always friendly, but I would like an apology (道歉) from your impolite head
waiter and a full refund (退款) for our meal. It cost $68. Until then, I will not be eating at your restaurant
or recommending (推薦) it to anyone.
You can contact me at 742-3254 or through e-mail if you want more information.
     Thank you for your attention.
                                                                                                                                Yours sincerely
                                                                                                                                 Raymond Yuen
現在電子郵件已基本為你寫好。請你仔細閱讀上面的投訴信,然后根據短文內容在橫線上填上恰當
的單詞,每條橫線不準超過5個單詞。
Dear Mr Yuen,
I have received and read your complaining letter. First of all, I would like to (1)              to you. I'm
sorry we have brought you so much unpleasure. In fact I wasn't at my restaurant when you last came to
have dinner here. I believe (2)              in the email is true. I think my head waiter (3)             . He shouldn't
treat you like that. I have decided to invite your family to have a dinner for free at my restaurant as soon as
possible. I will give you back the (4)             . I'll also tell the head waiter to say sorry to you when you
come. I will give a nice present to your son as his birthday present although his birthday has passed. I hope
you will eat at my restaurant as usual and (5)             your friends.
Please contact me if you have time. I'm looking forward to meeting you and your family at my restaurant.
Thank you for your support.
                                                                                                                                   Yours Sincerely
