All cities and even most towns in the UK have a library. You can borrow ( 借) many books for free. I'm a member of the library in my town. I can borrow twenty books for free, I can use the computers there, and I can take my two-month-old daughter! So she can start reading from an early age. The library also has lots of activities for adults ( 成年人) and children. They help me and my daughter get to know people around.

There are some very great libraries in the UK. For example, the British Library is the largest (最大的) library in the UK. It has over 150 million items (物品)! Hammersmith Library is not that big, but there is a teen area and a children's library.

Reading is a very good way to learn. If you come to study in the UK one day, let the libraries here help you.

Activity:Read to me

It's important to read to your children and it’s also important to listen to them read to you.

What you’ll need: Books at your child’s reading level.

What to do:

▲Read good books to your child. Parents who read aloud to their children are developing their interests and skills in reading. Encourage your children to listen, express their ideas, and ask questions.

▲Take turns. You read a paragraph and let your child read the next one. If your child becomes easier with reading aloud, you can ask him or her to read a full page.

▲Listen carefully as your child reads. Listening to your child will encourage him or her to practice reading. Besides, this is another way to enjoy reading together.

▲If your child has trouble reading words, you can help him or her in some ways:

●Ask the child to jump over the word and read the rest，then try to guess the meaning of the missing word.

●Guide your child to use what he or she knows about letter sounds.

●Tell your child that you are proud of his or her hard working.
