It is not a good idea for children to have to work hard. Children should study in school as hard as they can. They should not have to do heavy work with their bodies. When parents or others force(強(qiáng)迫)their children to work hard, the results are never good. Many may be very bad. If a farmer makes his son work like a man, he may easily learn to hate farming.

Children sometimes do too much in gardens, in shops, or even in their own homes. They soon begin to hate such work with a force, because that can destroy their happiness. But there may be a worse loss, child’s love for its parents. The feeling may become something different. When that happens, the old kind of love never returns.

There was once a man called Mr. Flowers, and flowers were his only joy in life. He spent all his free time in one of his four glass-houses and grew flowers of every colour, with long and difficult names, for competitions (比賽). He tried to grow a rose of a new colour to win the silver cup (銀杯) for the Rose of the Year.

Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses were very near to a middle school. Boys of around thirteen of age were often tempted (引誘) to throw a stone or two at one of Mr. Flowers’ glass-houses. So Mr. Flowers did his best to be in or near his glass-houses at the beginning and end of the school day.

But it was not always possible to be on watch at those times. Mr. Flowers had tried in many ways to protect his glass-houses, but nothing that he had done had been useful. He had been to school to report to the headmaster, but this had not done any good. He had tried to drive away the boys that threw stones into his garden, but the boys could run faster than he could, and they laughed at him from far away. He had even picked up all the stones that he could find around his garden, so that the boys would have nothing to throw, but they soon found others.

At last Mr. Flowers had a good idea. He put up a large notice (布告) made of good, strong wood, some metres away from the glass-houses. On it he had written the words: DO NOT THROW STONES AT THIS NOTICE. After this, Mr. Flowers had no further trouble; the boys were much more tempted to throw stones at the notice than at the glass-houses.

信息還原

It was a cold winter afternoon before Christmas. My parents and I were waiting for the train. There were many people inside the waiting hall .

A boy sat nearby. His worn jacket, pale face, dirty hands all seemed to tell me that he was homeless.

"He must be cold and hungry. Maybe I should help him," I said to myself.

1. .

"Excuse me," the man bent down. "My wife and I bought two meal boxes but one was enough for us. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?" He handed the boy a meal box.

2. .Suddenly he stopped and looked outside. There, at the door, I saw an old man in rags-in a worn sweater and open shoes, entering the hall.

Putting the meal box aside, the boy stood up and helped the old man to his seat. "A gentleman brought me this warm meal but I just finished eating. I hate to waste good food. Can you help me out?" He placed the still-warm meal box in the old man's hands without waiting for an answer.

"Sure, son, but if only you share that sandwich with me. 3. ."

We were all touched. Dad went away and soon returned with cups of hot chocolate and a big pizza. Mum and Dad went up to those in rags, "Excuse me..."

I rushed into a KFC and took out my pocket money. 4. ,but I felt much warmer than I had ever thought possible.

A.It was so cold that afternoon

B.It's too much for a man at my age.

C.The boy thanked them and opened the box with joy and care.

D.Just at that moment, a well-dressed young couple walked towards him.
