I used to show great interest in music, dance and plays. I felt happy and I didn’t think I was different from anyone else.
Then one night at a high school dance, I overheard(偶然聽到) someone say,“ That girl, what a pity she is blind.” Blind! That ugly word hurt me badly. Quickly I turned and called out, “Please don’t feel sorry for me. I’m having lots of fun.” But the fun was not to last.
After I went to college, I found a part-time job to make a living. I played the piano in bars to make a little money. But still I was always too poor to buy what I needed. That made me very upset.
I became more and more upset when my sisters and friends went off exciting dates while I could only stay on my own.
Then one day, I met a girl who lived two blocks away from my house. We got to know each other. She found out my sadness. "Stop knocking on closed doors. Keep up your beautiful music. You are trying too hard. Why not stop complaining and try your best to help each other?” She said.
The idea sounded fresh to me. So I decided to have a try. From then on, the girl and I often worked in a school for blind children. I liked to help them get through the hard times of life. Now my life is full of pleasure and comfort though the dark is still around me.

There were three big fish in the lake. One of them, Demo, was wise; another one, Jimmy, was half-wise; Martin, the third one, was stupid.
Some fishermen came to the bank of the lake with their nets(漁網(wǎng)). The three fish saw them.
Demo decided at once to leave, to make the long and difficult trip to the ocean. He thought, “I won’t discuss with these two about this. [4]They love this place so much that they call it home and will stay on. How silly they are! Their ignorance(愚昧) will cost them their lives.”
Seeing the wise fish had left, Jimmy thought, “My guide has gone and now I’ve lost my chance to escape(逃離).” He felt sorry for it and then thought, “What can I do to save myself from these men and their nets? Perhaps I should pretend(假裝) to be already dead.” So he did that. He went up and down with the water, helpless.
“Look at this! [5]最好的也是最大的魚是死的。” One of the men lifted him by the tail, and threw him up on the ground. He rolled(滾動) over and over and moved secretly toward the water, and then, back in.

A young boy was hungry for success. For him, winning was everything.
One day, the boy was preparing himself for a running competition in his small village. He was to compete with two other young boys. A large crowd gathered there to watch, including a wise old man.
The race began. With his strength and power, the boy easily took the lead. The crowd cheered and waved. The little boy felt proud and important. However, the wise man remained still and caim.
“Another race, another race!” yelled the little boy. The wise old man stepped forward and presented the little boy with two new challengers: an old lady and a blind man.
The race started and the boy was the only one to cross the finish line. The little boy raised his arms happily. The crowd, however, was silent.
“Race again,” said the wise man. “This time, all three of you finish together.”
The little boy thought a little, stood in between the blind man and the old lady, and then took them by the hand. The race began and the little boy walked slowly to the finishing line and crossed it. The crowd cheered and waved. The wise man smiled, too.
