Pele is the most famous football player in Brazil. He is also one of the best loved footballers all over the world. Pele's 1 began when he was a small boy. Pele scored six of them. 8 Pele, Brazil became the world champion for the first time. In one famous match, everyone was waiting for the 9 when Pele would score his thousandth goal. The referee (裁判) gave Santos a penalty kick (點(diǎn)球). Pele walked up to take it. The opposing goalkeeper had no chance with the 10 and accurate (準(zhǔn)確的) shot. Pele had scored his thousandth goal! The other players ran to 11 him, and then Pele had a 12 . The opposing goalkeeper took off his football jersey (運(yùn)動衫) there, under it, he 13 a T-shirt with the figure “1000” 14 in silver. Crowds ran on the field, and the game was delayed (延遲) for twenty minutes.
Pele played for Brazil in the World Cup in 1962, 1966 and 1970. When he retired (退役), Santos thanked him by 15 him a solid gold football weighing 4.5 pounds.

But I am really a kind monster and will be a good friend to someone. If you would like to meet me, please stand outside Blake’s Store at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 22nd. Write to me at Box 45. Everybody’s Magazine.”
A few days later he went to the magazine.
“Do you have any letters for Box 45?” he asked.
The Editor looked in Box45.
“Yes, there is one.” she said, and gave it to him.
The monster opened the letter, and read, “Dear Monster, I think a person’s character(品行)is more important than his appearance. I will wait outside Blake’s Store on Friday. Please carry a flower so that I will recognize you. Yours sincerely, Miss Alice Thwaite.”
