“Children need more geography field trips. Schools should organize geography field trips to stop pupils from sitting before computer screens for a long time. And children should be encouraged to see the natural world and study geography,” says Michael Palin.
The famous actor and writer, Michael Palin, made the comments days after a study showed that pupils in the UK were less likely to take part in science field trips than in most other developed countries.
The study found that 13% of schools in the UK failed to take children out of the classroom regularly.
Mr. Palin said that field trips were an important part of geography and that he was interested in geography because he had a good geography teacher and he had many opportunities to “get out of the school building”.
In an interview, Mr. Palin said, “It was important for children to see things for themselves and learn about the rest of the world. You have to show them a mountain, show them a factory, show them a power station.”
Mr. Palin had been to the North and South Poles, the Himalayas(喜馬拉雅山脈), the Sahara and Eastern Europe.
“Geography is about the study of the earth. It is a wide-ranging subject,” he said. “It’s related to everything we do: what we eat, what transport we take to work, where we live, what houses are made of, and so on.”
He said children needed to get basic geography knowledge first and that once they had the basic knowledge they could move on to deeper problems, such as population and pollution. “Today’s children will need to deal with a lot of problems when they grow up. They have to learn geography today,” he said.

According to a new scientific research, we are rapidly going close to major climate change and the effects on the environment could be quite serious. Geographers predict that climate zones could completely disappear within the next eighty years. Where will crops be grown if this happens? When the climate changes a lot, polar regions will get colder and tropical regions will get even hotter. As a result, where will animals be forced to move on the earth?
Climate changes like these could lead to the spread of diseases. Tropical storms and hurricanes(颶風(fēng)) will not only increase but may also become stronger. If the changes come too quickly, animals and plants may not be able to adapt(適應(yīng)) right away and could disappear from the earth.
According to Science Daily, a new study predicts that, by the year 2100, many of today’s familiar climates will be taken place by climate unknown in today’s world. It is urgent that we reduce the risks of far-reaching results for the whole world. The planet itself has been showing signs of change. In 2004, a huge tsunami created by a major earthquake killed thousands in Sumatra and in 2008, thousands more died in China in another big earthquake. Egypt was hit in 2009 with a major earthquake and Haiti was destroyed seriously and became ruins in 2010 by another big earthquake.
Not long ago, scientists discovered ice melting(融化) in west Antarctica(南極洲). This is very worrying because temperatures in this area have remained rather constant(不斷的) and actually even lower at time. Melting occurs when temperatures increase and since temperatures have remained, the ice should not be melting. However, satellite data(數(shù)據(jù)) shows melting around west Antarctica.
Within just the last few months, new reports from around the world have been coming in and most agree that our climate situation is much worse than previously expected. At this point, it doesn’t matter what is causing it, but rather, what can be done about it. On the other hand, our world is getting more and more unstable(不穩(wěn)定) every year. Natural disasters(災(zāi)難) are becoming more frequent(頻繁的) and serious.
However, other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connections between these. No one knows anything for sure at this point because there is simply not enough data.
1.What’s the writer’s attitude toward the climate changes?
A.We should observe the great changes of the climate carefully.
B.We must connect with other planets to prevent the climate changes.
C.We should try our best to do something against the climate changes.
D.We need to discover what causes the climate changes first of all.
2.What does the underlined word “tropical” mean?
A.cold and dry
B.cool and wet
C.hot and wet
D.warm and dry
3.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Collecting more data will help us to solve the problem.
B.The climate will be much better than we have expected.
C.Earthquakes can be avoided in a few years’ time.
D.The ice in west Antarctica will stop melting in the future.
4.What’s the passage mainly about?
A.It tells us how to protect the environment of the earth.
B.It talks about the bad effects of the climate changes.
C.It shows us how to prevent diseases from spreading.
D.It describes what we should do with the earthquakes.

Dear Jenny,
How’s it going? Are you busy with your study these days?
I’ve been back at school nearly four weeks. I’m very glad to tell you that great have taken place in our school this term. First of all, we’re asked to “clear our plates” when having our meals and say to wasting. Some of us used to order more than what we could eat. That was a big waste of food. Now we need to the food we order. We should also stop wasting in some other ways. For example, we should turn off the lights when we the classroom. And our school has opened up some fields for us to learn how to grow vegetables. Each class is given a small garden and our class has decided to grow some tomatoes and beans( 豆類) in our time. I think that’ll be very interesting. Maybe I’ll be able to you some beans we’ve grown by ourselves next time! What’s more, we have only two classes in the afternoon we have more time for after-school activities. I’m one of the traffic safety volunteers in our school. After school, we take turns to go to the streets near our school and ask people to the traffic rules.
I think we are having a different school life now!
Please write back soon and tell more about your school.
Yours,
Wang Wei
