Passage 8(2014 天津,C)

Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “ no”, or “ we don't know. ” But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers (天文學(xué)家) .They believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact these beings (人;生物).

Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time.Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old.u This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent lifesay Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the Hubble Telescope (哈勃望遠(yuǎn)鏡) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies ,” says Shostak. “ And our galaxy, the Milky Way,has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to Earth.

In the past,it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes (高倍望遠(yuǎn)鏡) allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth—in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.

Have beings from space already visited Earth? uProbably not/' says Shostak.u Ifs a long way away. However, intelligent beings may contact us in other ways, such as radio signals (信號(hào)) .In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now,but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025,we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other."

Look closely at your hands. Are they clean? It doesn’t matter how many times you wash your hands, tiny microbes (微生物) still stay on them. But don't worry. Most microbes don't harm you.

Now scientists say the microbes on our hands could be used in a surprising way : fighting crime. According to a recent study, microbes as well as fingerprints (指紋) could be used to identify the criminal.

Everyone has his own set of microbes on the hands. That is to say,if you and your best friend were able to see and compare all the microbes on your hands, your hands probably would look different. Some microbes only show up on your hands while others live only on your friend’s hands.

When you work on a computer, you leave the microbes from your hands on the key board. The scientists can easily tell the owner of the keyboard by looking at the microbes on it. Even if you don't leave your fingerprints behind, your microbes may give you away.

Noah Fierer,a scientist, says, “ You can only clean a fingerprint, but you can’t sterilize (使無菌) a surface just by wiping (擦) it off.M He says that scientists have a lot more work to do before the microbe is used as a useful tool.

Passage 3(2015 江蘇鎮(zhèn)江,C)

It is believed in some ways that the daughter is the fathers lover. But my experience has taught me in a different way. For a long time,my father has been a very vague figure (模糊的形象) to me.He was a man of few words, tall but slim and nothing else.

When I was in primary school,my father was never there to pick me up,and he never came to any of my parentteacher meetings. He was always busy doing projects. I remember when I was in middle school and my head was badly hurt in a PE class. During my operation,my father was nowhere to be found. This hurt me most. At that moment,I considered my father as a coldblooded man who did not care about me at all.

My father, once again, told me he had a business trip in a place outside the city and would be unable to show up (露面) .“Don’t come.I will be very nervous if I see you ,” I told him.

At my graduation ceremony,I could feel my father’s deep love. The fact is that seeing is not believing, and seeing may not be the fact if we don't perceive (感知) the world with our hearts and minds. There’s no doubt that life doesn’t lack (缺少) love, but sometimes our eyes have trouble seeing it.
