One of the things to be learnt in a foreign language is guessing all the time what kind of thing to come when listening to someone talking. People do this all the time in their own language, so it is necessary to do this in a foreign language, too. Here are some examples.
? “What’s the matter?” “I went to a party last night, so I...”
? “I feel so tired these days.” “I think you’d better..
? “Of course, she never stops talking. She is one of the most.. ”
You can see from the above three examples that the context (上下文)helps a lot in understanding what is being talked about. So “guessing” is very important in understanding English, especially spoken English.

Many people believe that life has smiled to Yang Mi: at the age of 4, she got her first TV play role; at 16, she became a model for a fashion magazine; at 18, she went to her dream college — Beijing Film Academy. In 2012, the 24-year-old actress played the bad girl Luo Qingchuan in the time-travelling TV play, Palace. The play became a big success and made Yang very famous. Could she be any luckier? Yang doesn’t think luck had anything to do with her success. “Every chance is gained (獲得)from the efforts (努力)I’ve made,” said Yang. People now think she’s very hard-working. She still remembers the time when people gave her the cold eyes. Some treated her with little respect. They didn’t want to help her in her time of need. “I have to thank them because they gave me the drive to prove myself,’’ she said. That’s why she is glad to help others when they are in need. Last year,Yang became the ambassador (大使)for the Climate Group. She calls on people to join the Million-Miracle project and plant trees on China’s dry land. Together we’ll fight the bad weather!

Country music is one of the most popular kinds of music in the United States today because it is about simple but strong human feelings and events — love, sadness, good times, and bad times. It tells real-life stories and sounds the way people really talk. As life becomes more complicated (復(fù)雜),it is good to hear music about ordinary people, just like school children, factory workers or anyone you meet in streets.
Country music, sometimes called country-western, comes from two kinds of music. One is the traditional music of the people in the Appalachian Mountains in the eastern Unite States. The other is traditional cowboy music from the west. The singers usually play guitars, and in the 1920s they started using electric guitars (電吉他). At first city people said country music was low class. It was popular mostly in the South. But during World War II,thousands of Southerners went to the Northeast and Midwest to work in the factories. They took their music with them. Soldiers (士兵)from the rest of the country went to army camps in the South. They learned country music. Slowly it became popular all over the country.
Today country music is also popular everywhere in the United States and Canada — in small towns and in New York City, among black and white, and among educated and uneducated people. About 1,200 radio stations play country music twenty-four hours a day. English stars sing it in British English, and people in other countries sing it in their own languages. The music that started with cowboys and poor southerners is now popular all over the world.
