We’ve all heard of mermaids. They are the beautiful half-human, half-fish creatures(生物). They have the head and body of a human and the tail of a fish. We also know that mermaids only exist in fairy tales. But where did all the stories about these creatures come from? If you have ever seen a manatee, then you might have an idea.

Manatees, which are also called sea cows, are mammals(哺乳動物) that live in the sea. Since they are mammals, they have to swim up to the surface to breathe air. Many people believe that the story of the mermaid began with the ancient sailors who saw the manatees putting their heads out of the water to breathe. Because manatees are upright when they do this, it looks like they are standing. If a sailor saw a manatee doing this from far away across the sea, it is possible that the sailor would mistake the manatee for a creature that is half-human, half-fish.
Mermaids are described as having very long hair. This is probably because manatees like to swim up to the surface of the water in areas where there is sea grass. Manatees eat all kinds of plants in the sea, including sea grass. The sea grass around the manatee’s head when they eat could create a picture of long hair.

Manatees also have powerful tails that are very similar to the fish-like tail of a mermaid. The sailors probably watched manatees come up for air and then swim back below the surface, using their paddle-shaped tails. This would explain why the sailors thought mermaids had fish-like tails.

Now more and more people in the world are getting fatter. This troubles them a lot. (1)Experts(專家) say that it has a lot to do with our eating habits.
Our eating habits are very important for good health and a strong body. Most of us like eating sweets and ice cream better than vegetables and rice. Sweets and ice cream are not bad for us if we eat them at the end of a meal. (2)If we eat them before a meal, they may take away our appetite(食欲).
It’s important for us to eat our meal in the same period each day. When we feel worried or excited, we may not want to eat. A long time ago, in England, some judges(法官) often decided whether a man was telling the truth by giving him some dry bread. Roosegaarde, an artist and designer from Dutch has thought of a device(裝置). He hopes it will make Beijing's sky clear again and help the people with masks breathe fresh air again in Beijing.
An electromagnetic field(電磁場) will pull the dirty particles in the air to the ground, and then they can be easily cleaned.
Roosegaarde says, "It's like when you have a balloon which has static electricity(靜電) and your hair goes toward it. Smog happens the same way as the hair."
His workplace has reached an agreement with the Beijing government to test the technology in one of the capital's parks.  Beijing's skies are regularly covered by grey smog. Serious cases of air pollution are often reported in Beijing. Roosegaarde says an indoor test has already shown it works well and he is confident of the results. With the help of a team of scientists and engineers, he is sure that the device can be worked outside.
"Beijing is a very good place to test the device because the smog in Beijing is quite low and there's not so much wind." says Roosegaarde. "We'll be able to make the air pure but the most difficult thing is to remove the smog. As a result, you can see the sun again."
Roosegaarde also reminds us that his aim is not only to give a plan to solve Beijing's dirty air pollution but also to make people pay attention to the environment problem. He adds, "This is not the real answer for smog. The real answer to do with it is clean cars, different industry and different lifestyles. " However, he hopes the project will make the citizens realize the differences between clean air and smog-filled air.

Snake dishes have become popular in recent years. Snake meat is often seen in restaurants. It seems that eating snakes is now in fashion, and if you ( A ) ___________ (not eat) any snakes yet, you’re considered out-of-date. But I wonder whether it is worth following.
Some people think that eating snake meat is good for their health. But these people don’t know that snakes usually eat mice and worms. Therefore, there are many parasites(寄生蟲)found inside snakes’ bodies. ( B ) 它們可能對我們的健康有害。 Apart from this, we’re sorry to see that more snakes are being killed by a butcher’s knife. According to the newspaper, Shanghai Star, about 1,000 tons of snakes are eaten by people every year in China. In Shenzhen of Guangdong Province, sometimes as many as 10 tons of snakes are served on dinner tables in a single day. ( C ) If we still turn a blind eye to this, a vicious circle(惡性循環(huán))will be created — if more snakes are eaten by people, the number of snakes will drop, and the number of mice will increase, which will result in a decrease in crop output. This will make more people hungry. Who wants to see such a tragedy?
( D ) Therefore, let’s not eat snakes any more! To protect the snakes is to protect ourselves.

Ted, my little brother, is in Grade One. Last Friday he came back from school with a letter.  The letter was from his teacher. "I got a red flower today. Could you please sign簽字 this note?" he said to Mum. The note showed that he had been talking in class.
Ted hardly gets top scores in his school work. The best he gets is "OK", but often he gets "You can do better than this." Mum knows what it means. She tells me "You can do better than this" means "Extremely bad" in China.
In the USA, teachers never say anything too bad about their students, even if the students are making trouble in class or not working hard enough. The worst they might say is "Please be nicer tomorrow". Many parents are satisfied with對---滿意 a B-grade for each subject.
But things in Chinese schools are quite different. Parents have high expectations for their children. I sometimes felt that my second-grade cousin spent more time on homework than I did when I was a 6th grader in the USA! Yet his parents and teachers didn't think he worked hard enough.
Is it too strict in China? Or is it not strict enough in the USA? Maybe both are true.
