British newspapers are much smaller than they used to be and their readers are often in a hurry, so newspapermen write as few words as possible. They tell their readers at once what happened, where, when and how it happened and what was the result: how many people were killed, what damage was done, which famous man married which woman , who did very well in the match and so on. Readers want the fact set out as fully and accurately as possible. Readers are also interested in the people who have seen the accdient. So a newspaperman always likes to get some information from someone who was there, which can be given in the person’s own words. Because he can use only a few words, the newspaperman must choose those words carefully, every one must be effective. Instead of “he called out in a loud voice”, he writes “he shouted”; instead of “the loose stones rolled noisily down the side of the mountain”, he will write “they thundered down the mountainside”. Because many of the readers aren’t very clever, and most of them are in a hurry,….

LONDON (Reuters) — British milkman Steve Leech, who saved several shops and flats by putting out a fire with 320 pints of milk, was celebrating Thursday after winning a national bravery award.
Leech, 35, named “Hero Milkman” by the National Dairymen’s Association, said that he had noticed smoke coming out of a shop in Cornwall, southern England, while delivering (遞送) milk as usual a year ago.
“I saw the flats up above and thought I’d better do something. So I kicked the door in and started pouring milk everywhere,” Lee told Reuters Thursday.
“When firemen arrived, the fire was almost out,” he said. Firemen said he had helped save the lives of eight people living in the flats above the shops.
“It was hard work opening all those bottles, especially since they have tamper-proof lids. But it was even harder trying to explain to my boss where all the milk had gone.”

There are 5 channels on British television and each channel has several news programs all day long. Some programs are only for 3 minutes but some are one hour long. The people who read the news are called news presenters and because they appear on television every day, they are very famous.
This is a popular news presenter in England called Trevor McDonald, in the news studio. He presents a program called “News at Ten”every Monday to Friday evenings.
Another popular news presenter is Kirsty Young. She has a more modern style of reading the news, as you can see, she sits on the desk not on a chair!
Television news presenters need to have worked as journalists because they have to write most of the news that they read. Sometimes an important new event happens after the program has started, so the presenter has to be able to read something without looking at it first. They must always keep calm even when there are many changes during the program. At the end of “News at Ten”Trevor McDonald says “And finally...”. Then he reads an unusual or interesting item. Hundreds of years ago, news was carried from place to place by people on foot or by horse. It took days, weeks and sometimes months for people to receive news. Now it is possible to send words and pictures around the world in seconds. Billions of people learn about news of their country and all over the world every day, either by watching TV or reading newspapers.
Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since 18th century. Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers. How do newspaper editors decide which news to print? Why do they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story?
Firstly, it’s important to report news. TV stations can report news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the story. They may also look at the story in another way, or they may print completely different stories from those on TV.
Secondly, a new story has to be interesting and unusual. People don’t want to read stories of everyday life. As a result, many stories are about some kind of danger and seem to be “bad” news. For example, newspapers never print stories about planes landing safely, instead they print stories about plane accidents.
Another factor(因素) is also very important. Many people are interested in news in foreign countries, but more prefer to read stories about people, places and events in their own country. So the stories on the front page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different from the ones in British, French and American newspapers.

B.people can read the news story more quickly in a newspaper
C.people can read news stories in other countries
D.people can read news stories about their own country
4.To make a good newspaper story, how many factors does the passage talk about?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Five. D.Six.
5.Which is NOT TRUE in the passage?
A.Newspapers may print different stories from those on TV.
B.People like to read interesting and unusual news like plane accidents.
