Plants are very important. This is because plants can make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals and man cannot make food from air, water and sunlight. Animals can get their food by eating plants and animals. Man gets his food by eating plants and animals, too. So animals and man need plants in order to live. This is why there are so many plants around us.

There are two kinds of plants: flowering plants and non-flowering plants. Almost all the trees around us are flowering plants. You can know some trees from their flowers and fruits. Non-flowering plants do not grow flowers. You can not see many non-flowering plants around you.

If you look carefully at the plants around us, you will find that there are many kinds of plants. Some plants are large and some are small. Most of them are green. Thanks to the plants around us we can live on the earth.

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbor, Dr.Gibbs.He didn’t look like any 1 I 2 .He never invited us to play in his yard, but he was a very 3 person.

When Dr.Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. He owned a large field and wanted to make it a forest.

The good doctor had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees.Once I asked why.He said that watering plants spoiled them, and that if you 4 them, each baby tree would grow weaker and weaker, so you had to make things difficult for them and 5 the weaker trees early.

He talked about how watered trees grew shallow(淺的)roots, and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of water 6 the earth by themselves. 7 roots were very important.

So he never watered his trees. He'd planted an oak and, 8 watering it every morning, he'd beat it with a rolled-up newspaper.I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree's attention.

Dr.Gibbs died several years 9 I left home.Every now and then, I walked by his house and looked at the trees 10 I watched him 11 about twenty-five years ago. They’re very big and strong now.I planted some trees a few years later and carried water to them for a whole summer. After two years of 12 too much, whenever a cold wind blows in, they 13 a lot.

Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons.Mostly I pray(祈禱)that their lives will be easy. But lately I've been thinking that it's time to change my prayer.I know my children are going to face difficulties. There's always a cold wind 14 somewhere, so 15 we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the brave heart, so when the rains fall and the winds blow, we can face it strongly and won't be beaten down.

Today there are 6 billion people on the earth. By the year 2050 there may be 12.5 billion. This means we need more food.

One way to produce more food is by growing stronger plants. For thousands of years, farmers have made plants better. Every season, they pick the best plants for the next season. It works very slowly. Since 1983, scientists have been able to change plants more quickly by changing their genetic material (遺傳物質(zhì)). Foods from plants grown in this way are called genetically modified foods (轉(zhuǎn)基因食品), or GM foods.

By changing the genetic material of a plant, it is possible to make new plants. They make plants which are strong against plant diseases. They can also help in our diseases: a kind of rice is being prepared (準(zhǔn)備), for example, which stops people from becoming blind.

Rich countries produce GM food because they are easy to grow and bring in more money. Poor countries are interested in them because they help produce more food.

GM plants are not natural. No one knows how good or bad they are. Making GM foods is only one way of feeding people in 2050. There are strong feelings against them, because they are unnatural. They may feed people, then hurt them or their children later. But, both rich and poor countries are very interested in their use, and they are not going to go away. In 2050 we may think differently about them.
