There is an old saying that all of us are born with two bags hung on our necks. A small bag in front of our chest is filled up with other people's faults (過(guò)錯(cuò)), while the big one at the back is full of our own shortcomings (短處).

So it’s easy to find other people's faults, but it's hard for us to see our faults behind us.

There was a boy, Tommy, who always opened the front bag to check what was in it. He saw other people's faults very quickly. When Simon was impatient with him, he said to Simon, "It's so easy for you to get angry. It is hard to be friends with you."

He told his mother about Jack's dishonesty. “Jack takes my things without asking. He also forgets to return them.” Tommy himself did not like sharing his things with anyone.

When Johnny was too tired to play with him, he said, "'You are such a rude person."

He thought Harry was too proud of his rich parents. But Tommy was proud of himself because he could not see any of his own shortcomings! He could not understand why he did not get on well with others.

If only Tommy would switch the bags around, he would discover his own impatience, dishonesty, bad manners and vanity (虛榮), which were no better than that of Simon, Jack, Johnny or Harry.

When the earthquake hit Japan on March 11, workers in a supermarket in Japan didn’t run away when they felt the shaking. Instead, they held on to the shelves and tried to stop the goods (貨物)from falling down.

Reporters from NHK, the country’s largest TV station, stayed calm in front of cameras during the earthquake, even though some were facing real danger.

The earthquake was the most powerful one to hit Japan in the country’s history. But Japan’s reaction( 反應(yīng) ) to the accident has shown that it is the most earthquake-prepared country in the world. The calm the Japanese showed during and after the quake has impressed the world.

This is because Japan has “an earthquake culture”. Japanese people are taught how to prepare for and react to earthquakes from a young age.

Schools in Japan organize earthquake practices every month. They make students become familiar with being in an earthquake.

You are going to read something about tree rings .There may be some new words, but you can guess their meaning according to the picture.

As a tree grows, it produces new layers of wood around the trunk (樹(shù)干) , just under the bark. If a tree is cut down, the layers are visible in a cross section. The layers are called tree rings.

We can learn many things from the tree rings. Most trees grow one new ring each year. Because of this we can know the age of a tree. But the tree does not grow at same speed all year. It grows very quickly in spring and summer, slowly in autumn and winter. The light ring is larger because it is the spring and autumn growth, the dark ring is the slow autumn and winter growth. So when you look at the rings, one year is a light and dark ring together. To find the age of the tree when it is cut down just count the dark rings. The oldest ring is the small one in the middle and the youngest is the last ring just below the bark.

The size of tree rings are different each year, that depends upon the environmental conditions(條件) that the tree experiences. For most area tree rings will be wider(更寬的) during years of plenty of rain and narrower(更窄的) during times of little rain. Sometimes the rings are closer together on one side of a tree and wider apart on the other. That’s because one side of the tree has grown faster than the other. Trees like all plants need light and space to grow, maybe this kind of trees have been on the edge(邊緣) of the forest and received more light.

  1. Look at the picture below, it’s part of the tree ring, we can know the age of the tree is

  A. 14 B. 28 C. 29

  2. The ring just below the bark is the ring of a tree.

  A. earliest B. widest C. latest

  3. Which tree may live at the edge of the forest?

  A. B. C.

  4. If the ring of 1998 is wider than that of 2000, that means .

  A. there is less rain in 2000 than in 1998

  B. the winter is colder in 1998 than in 2000

  C. there is one more day in 2000 than in 1998

  5. According to the passage, which statement is NOT TRUE?

  A. A tree grows at the same speed each year.

  B. If you want to know the age of a tree, you can count the layers.

  C. We can get some information about the climate in the pass from the tree rings.
