【題目】“One father is worth more than a hundred schoolmaster,” Britain poet George Herbert once said. Bill Gates, the world’s richest man, agrees.
When he was a little kid, Gates was silent and hated to talk with others. He spent most of his time alone—reading books and thinking. To help his son, Gates’ father held family meetings and let him play simple games with family members. “These activities seemed silly but they improved my leading and working-together abilities,” Gates said later.
While mothers offer a more gentle kind of love, fathers teach qualities like independence(獨立), confidence, courage and adventure(冒險). Children learn these things from their fathers when they play sports or games together.
British scientists showed that children who grow up without their fathers may have many problems. They may not have enough courage for facing difficulties, may be shy and worried or may even commit crimes(犯罪).
A caring father can help children get along well with others. Fathers not only lead their children into social circles but also teach them how to behave and control their feelings. Moreover, fathers let you know who you are. They lead you to learn what you should be like as a girl or a boy.

【題目】There are many colours in nature. But do you know that a colour has weight? I think you’ll say “no”. But I am afraid you are wrong. If you don’t believe, you may do a small experiment(實驗).
First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the boxes. Wrap(包裹) one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why does it happen? A scientist found that different colours have different weight in a man’s mind. So he did many tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every colour has its own weight in our mind. The heaviest colour is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white. The scientists told us that colours also have smell. Can you smell the colour? Of course not. Then why did the scientists say so? That is because every colour represents a kind of light wave(光波)------ a certain wavelength(波長). It reaches our brain(大腦) through organs(感覺器官)
According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colour they like, and refuse the colour they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colours you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. If you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture(家具) for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. That means our body temperature will change when we see different colours.

【題目】閱讀填空
Anger is a natural reaction(反應) which comes out when we feel that we have not been treated fairly. The good side of this negative emotion(負面情緒)is that it has helped us to shape and improve our manners. However it will become a problem if we can’t control it. For example, sometimes it happens that your anger hurts others or breaks your friendship and you regret later. It is also bad for the health.
We should control anger so that it does not cause harm to us or to those we love. One of the best ways to control anger is to get help from others. If you feel that you are unable to manage your anger, it can make more trouble. So tell someone that is close to you, a friend or a family member about your problem. When you discuss a matter with others, there is a better chance to solve your problems. Besides, to be humorous is a good choice to reduce your anger. When you feel that it is because of stress that your anger is out of control, you can use humor. It can help you look at difficult things in a lighter way and you will feel better about the things around you.
Anger makes us have a lot of negative thoughts. So we have to change the negative thoughts into positive ones. For this, you must say ‘No’ to all the negative thoughts in your mind first. This can be done with a lot of practice. When you are successful in that, you have to think only about positive things of life.
Meditation(冥想)is an excellent anger management way. What’s more, what we do is to keep ourselves from the outer world, and just care about the inner world. This helps us develop a sense of controlling our thoughts that can cause anger.

【題目】Improve Homework Habits
Do you want to make homework simpler? It can be done readily with a little guidance from specialists (專家) in this field. Oxford Learning founder and CEO Dr. Nick Whitehead said that homework doesn’t always have to be a headache. “Homework might be an unavoidable (不可避免的) part of school, but it doesn’t have to be the boring part. With the right skills in place, students can turn homework from headache-including to trouble-free.” These steps will make an obvious difference.
Use your notebooks
The brain is able to finish great works, but it is not perfect. Students should never rely on (依賴) it to remember all school details. When a teacher assigns homework, students should write the details in their notebooks. Many schools provide notebooks because they are the best organizational tools available.
According to Whitehead, to make them effective, students need to remember to take the notebooks out of their school bags at night, open them up, and read over the night’s list.
Remove distractions (使注意力分散的事物)
Computers on, music on, text messages receiving … this is not multitasking, it’s distracting.
Whitehead says that unless students are doing research, they should turn off all electronics and focus on the task at hand for a set period of time. They’ll find that it is easier to concentrate (全神貫注) and that homework takes less time. He adds that this fact has been confirmed by studies.
Think actively
Getting homework done is the name of the game, but what happens if students are struggling with a question, or can’t work out an answer? When facing difficulties, it is wise for the student to take a small break then return to look at the problem again.
According to Whitehead, students should look up their textbooks and school notes, take a step back to ask what the particular unit is all about, and even move ahead a few questions and see if the next part can help explain a little better. If not, use the Internet.
“Don’t stare at (盯著) the question; ask how this question relates to what is being learned overall.” he says.
Get organized
Homework is as much a part of daily routine as waking up in the morning and going to bed at night, but it’s often the most disorganized part. Whitehead recommends streamlining (使合理化) the process.“Students should keep all the homework-related things in a bin or a bucket so they don’t waste time searching for pens or rulers.” He also recommends picking the same place to do homework every night, and (when possible) completing homework at the same time each day.
