“My heart was pricked, Laotie.” Do you know what it means? The phrase was one of the 2017’s hottest internet slang phrases (俚語). The National Language Resources Monitoring and Research Center has released its list of the top 10 most-used slang phrases. These words show us some of the trends (潮流) that took place in 2017. Let’s see what they are and how they became popular.

Beat a call

The phrase “beat a call” is used to show support for people or things. It came from Japanese. It refers to a cheering dance performed by “otaku”, or people who are crazy about pop culture. They jump, clap and wave glow sticks (熒光棒). In October, the Xinhua News Agency used the phrase in an article about the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (黨的十九大), which made the phrase even more popular.

My heart was pricked, Laotie.

The word “Laotie” comes from northern Chinese dialect (方言) and means “good friends”. “Pricked heart” used to mean “hurting someone’s feelings”. The phrase has been used often on video-streaming (視頻播放) websites. It is now used between close friends who jokingly complain about each other.

Can you freestyle?

In 2017, hip-hop swept across China and brought new slang phrases. On the music program The Rap of China, judge Kris Wu often asked, “can you freestyle?” Freestyle refers to coming up with impromptu lyrics and performing them on the spot.

Awkward chat

“Awkward chat” means chats with boring people, you can’t avoid the chat, but your mind wanders off (走神) all the time. This may happen when the person you are talking with doesn’t have good communication skills, or your conversation comes to a dead end.
