What do you think is the most common illness? Do you get ill sometimes? We are lucky to live now, because there are lots of medicines to make people better.
The most common illness in the world is the cold. It often begins with a sore throat. Then you sneeze and your nose runs. You usually have a headache too. Often you cough later. It’s not a very bad illness, but you can feel quite ill.
There isn’t a cure (治愈) for a cold, but you can take medicines to make you feel better. For instance, aspirin (阿斯匹林) can stop your headache. It is good to rest, and to drink a lot of water too. A doctor once said to me, “With the proper medicine, a cold will continue for seven days. With no medicine, it will continue for a whole week!”
Where does our medicine come from? A long time ago, people knew that some plants made them feel better. They ate the leaves, the roots, the fruit, or the seeds of plants. For instance, the juice of lemons makes a sore throat feel better.
In modern times, scientists have looked at these plants, and found out which chemicals (化學(xué)物質(zhì)) are in them. Many of our medicines today are made from those chemicals.
There are some illnesses which we can’t cure yet. And nobody has found a cure for old age. But because of modern medicines, most people now live longer than their grandparents.

People have different ways of greeting each other. They might shake hands (握手), kiss or hug (擁抱). But do you ever wonder how dogs say hello?
If you are a dog lover, you already know the answer to this question. When you arrive home, your dog jumps up into your lap (大腿前部). It wags (搖擺) its tail, and sometimes gives you wet kisses.
Like humans, dogs have five senses (感覺): smell, touch, sight, hearing and taste. Humans use sight as the main sense for recognizing (認(rèn)出) one another. But dogs have poor eyesight. They use smell to recognize others. A dog’s sense of smell is much better than a human’s. It is through its sense of smell that tells the differences between different people.
Dogs use smell to recognize other dogs, too. They tell the differences by the smell of pee (小便) and pooh (大便). When two dogs meet, they smell each other’s noses. Then they go side to side, and smell each other’s butts (屁股). By smelling its friend’s behind, a dog knows who it is with.
That is also why dogs smell everything they can on the road. By smelling grass, trees and signposts (路標(biāo)), dogs know which other neighborhood dogs have been around.

Scientists are very interested in the Universe, and they always want to know more about it. Years ago they knew many things about the moon. They knew how big it is and how far away it is from the earth. But they wanted to know more about it. They thought the best way was to send men to the moon. The moon is about 384,000 kilometers away from the earth. A plane cannot fly to the moon because the air reaches only 240 kilometers away from the earth. But something can fly even when there is no air. That is a rocket(火箭)
How does a rocket fly? There is gas(氣體) in the rocket. When the gas is made very hot inside the rocket, it will rush out of the end of the rocket, so it can make the rocket fly up into the sky. Rockets can fly out into space. Rockets with men in them have been to the moon. Several rockets without men in them have flown to another planet(行星) much farther away than the moon. One day, rockets may be able to go to any place in space.

Maybe you know floods, droughts, earthquakes, sandstorms and so on. But have ever heard of typhoons(臺(tái)風(fēng))?

Typhoons are some of the worst storms, usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.

How does a typhoon happen? When lots of sea water gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates into the air. This makes the air hotter. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then, cooler air around it rushes in. It fills the space that is left. After the air gets warmer, it starts to move quickly, making wind. The wind goes in circles, and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 meters a second, a typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts, One is called the “eye”. In the eye, the wind does not move so fast. The other part is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest with and hardest rains are.

Typhoons are very dangerous. In 2004, Typhoon Yunna killed 164 people in Zhejiang, and 24 people were missing. In May 2006, Typhoon Pearl hit Guangdong and Fujian, and thousands of houses were damaged.

What to do when a typhoon hits:

Stay inside, Close all the windows and stay away from them.

Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bikes!
