Being a parent can be one of the happiest experiences of your life, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. No matter how old your children are, your work is never done. To be a good parent, you need to know how to make your children feel valued and loved, while teaching them the differences between right and wrong. If you want to know how to be a good parent, read the following steps.

Give your children love and affection(情感). Sometimes the best thing you can give your children is love and affection. A warm touch or a caring hug can let your children know how much you really care about them. Don’t ever overlook how important a physical connection is when it comes to your children.

Praise your children. Praising your children is an important part of being a good parent. You want your kids to feel proud of their achievements and good about themselves. If you don’t give them the confidence they need to be out in the world on their own, then they won’t feel allowed to be independent. When they do something good, let them know that you’ve noticed and you’re very proud of them.

Listen to your children. It’s important that your communication with your children goes both ways. You shouldn’t just be there to enforce(執(zhí)行) the rules, but to listen to your children when they are having problems. You have to be able to express interest in your children and involve yourself in their life. How often do you let other people’s rude actions change your mood? Do you let a bad driver or an impolite waiter make your day in a mess? However, the mark of your wise reply to the actions is how _____ you can come back to smiling to them. Sixteen years ago, I learned this _____ at the back of a taxi in New York.

We were driving fast in the right lane (車道) when suddenly, a black car jumped _____ a parking space right to front of us. My taxi driver stepped on the brake (剎車) as hard as possible, and at the _____ moment our car stopped just one inch from the back of the other car.

I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the car turned his head around and started _____ bad words. But then here’s what really _____ me. My taxi driver just smiled and waved (揮手致意) at the guy. I said, “Why did you just do that? This guy nearly _____ us!” He told me what I now remember “The Law of the Garbage (垃圾)Truck.”

He said, “Like garbage trucks, many people run around full of garbage, full of anger, and full of regret. _____ their garbage increases more and more, they look for a place to pour it. If you let them, they’ll pour it on you. So when someone wants to pour it on you, don’t feel hurt. Just smile, wave, and move on. You will be _____.”

I started thinking: how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and ______ it to other people? Then I knew clearly what I should do.

I began to see Garbage Trucks. I see the bad mood people are carrying. I see them coming to pour it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t feel hurt. I just smile, wave, and move on。
