Are newspapers dying?

For years, it has been said that newspapers are at death’s door. Every year brings more news of closing. But why is the situation so __________ for newspapers?

Newspapers have a long history. The first newspaper was printed in the 1600s. The industry witnessed its most successful periods in the early 20th century.

With the appearance of radio and TV, however, newspaper circulation (發(fā)行量) began to fall. By the mid-20th century, radio and TV had become so popular that people no longer had to ______ newspapers for news. That was especially true of breaking news.

Afternoon newspapers were the first to suffer. People coming home from work increasingly turned on the TV, instead of opening a newspaper because TV could provide news that happened a short time ago. It’s true that newspapers couldn’t compete with TV on ______, but they could provide in-depth reports that TV news could not.

But newspapers suffered another, heavier blow (打擊) in the 1990s. With the appearance of the internet, large amounts of information became ______. Many newspaper readers realized that they could read news on the Internet. There seemed to be little reason to pay for a newspaper subscription (訂閱).

So what does the future hold? Will newspapers die? Maybe not. Many newspapers are now making ________. Some are going digital. Some are going farther and taking the industry to places it has never been to. After all, people still want the news. And many agree that newspapers are still an important source of in-depth news, analysis and opinions. If newspapers _________ completely, there will be nothing to take their place.

【題目】閱讀下面的短文,然后根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問題。

The Forbidden City is also called “Zijincheng (purple forbidden city)”. It is the largest and greatest palace in China today. Under Ming Emperor ,people began to build the Forbidden City in 1406,and it took 14 years to finish it.

The palace is 960 meters long from north to south and 750 meters wide from east to west. It has 9,900 rooms under a total roof area 150,000 square meters. A 52-meter-wide-moat(護(hù)城河) encircles a 9.9 –meter- high wall which encloses the complex(綜合設(shè)施).

The Forbidden City in Beijing was the emperors’ palace during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Though its walls are red and its roofs are yellow, the palace’s name mentions the color purple. How did it get this name? In fact, this has more to do with what the palace stands for than what it looks like.

The character “ zi ” refers to (指代) the Ziwei star. According to ancient Chinese astronomy (天文學(xué)), the Ziwei star was surrounded (包圍) by 28 other stars, meaning it was the heart of the sky. People believed that the palace of the God Emperor, which is called Ziweigong, or Ziwei palace, was located on this star.

Chinese emperors were believed to be the sons of the God Emperor. It was believed that their palace on the earth should be like the Ziweigong in the sky. That’s how the Forbidden City got its name.

In Chinese culture, the color purple stands for good luck. This belief began with Laozi, the founder of Taoism (道教) who lived around 2,500 years ago. One day, when Laozi was traveling through the Hangu Pass (函谷關(guān)) in Henan from the east, a purple mist suddenly appeared in the air. This “purple air from the east” (紫氣東來) story led people to connect the color to great sages (圣人), and it also stands for nobility (高貴).

1When did people finish building The Forbidden City?

2Does the name of “Zijincheng” have more to do with what it looks like?

3How wide is the moat which encircles the high wall?

4Where was the God Emperor’s palace located according to ancient Chinese belief?

5What does the color “purple” stand for in Chinese culture?
