It is a cold and dry winter morning. When you wake up, you feel that your throat hurts. You begin to sneeze and later you may cough. You must have a cold! Wait a moment. Could it just be a common cold or the flu (流感) that’s been going around?
A cold gives you a runny nose and cough. But it’s usually easy to deal with. Some take medicine while others drink herbal tea or chicken soup. Usually you feel better after a week.
On the other hand, the flu can be much more dangerous. It usually gives you fever. Sometimes it can cause death. According to an American magazine, the worst flu killed about 50 million people from 1918 to 1919.
Don’t worry. If you get a flu vaccine (疫苗), it can stop you from getting the virus (病毒). Flu vaccines work by giving the body a small amount of flu viruses. This causes your body to develop antibodies (抗體). So next time you get the flu, the antibodies should help you.
The flu virus changes every few years. Therefore, there are so many types of flu, such as H1N1 and H5N1. The antibodies for one type of flu can’t help us against all types of flu. That’s why we need to get the vaccine every year.
However, good health habits may also help stop you developing a cold or flu. Washing your hands often helps stop you from getting viruses. It is also important to get regular exercise and eat healthy food. All these can help you strengthen your immune system (增強免疫系統(tǒng)).

One afternoon, I went to pick up my mother from work. I got there a little early, so I my car by a small park, and for her.
As I looked outside the car window, I saw a little boy, around two years old, running on the grass as his mother from a short distance. The boy would then fall to the grass, up, without looking back at his mother, run as as he could, again, still with a smile on his face, as if nothing had happened .
At that moment, I thought to myself, “Why aren’t most adults this way?” Most adults, when they fall down, make a big deal out of it and don’t even a second attempt. However, with kids, when they fall down, they don’t consider their falling down as a failure, instead, they treat it as a experience. They try again and again until they . One afternoon I toured an art museum while waiting for my husband to finish a business meeting. I was looking forward to a quiet view (觀察) of the art works.
A young couple viewing the paintings ahead of me chatted non-stop between themselves. I watched them a moment and knew the wife was doing all the talk. I admired the husband’s patience. I met with them several times. Each time I heard her words, I moved away quickly.
I was standing at the counter of the museum gift shop when the couple came near to the exit. Before they left, the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a white object. He extended (延長) it into a long stick and then tapped (輕敲) his way into the coatroom to get his wife’s jacket.
“He’s a brave man.” The clerk at the counter said, “Most of us would give up if we were blinded at such a young age. During his recovery he made a promise that his life wouldn’t change. So, as before, he and his wife come in whenever there’s a new art show.”
“But what does he get out of the art?” I asked, “He can’t see.”
“Can’t see? You’re wrong. He sees a lot. More than you or I do.” The clerk said, “His wife describes each painting so he can see it in his head.”
I learned something about patience, courage and love that day. I saw the patience of a young wife describing paintings to a person without sight and the courage of a husband who would not allow blindness to change his life. And I saw the love shared by two people as I watched this couple walk away hand in hand.

You are given many chances in life to choose to be a victim(受害者) or creator. When you choose to be a victim, the world is a cold and difficult place. “They” did things to you which caused all of your pain and suffering. “They” are wrong and bad, and life is terrible as long as “they” are around. Or you may blame yourself for all your problems, then internalizing(內化)your victimization. The truth is, your life is likely to stay that way as long as you feel a need to blame yourself or others.
Those who choose to be creators look at life quite differently. They know there are persons who might like to control their lives, but they don’t let this get in the way. They know they have their weaknesses, yet they don’t blame themselves when they fail. Whatever happens, they have choice in the matter. They believe their dance with each sacred(神圣的)moment of life is a gift and that storms are a natural part of life which can bring the rain needed for emotional and spiritual growth.
Victims and creators live in the same physical world and deal with many of the same problems, yet their experience of life is different worlds. Victims are easy to be in anger, guilt, and other emotions that cause others--and even themselves--to feel like victims, too. Creators choose love, inspiration, and other qualities which inspire(鼓舞)not only themselves, but all around them. Both victims and creators always have choice to decide the direction of their lives.
In fact, all of us play the victim or the creator at different points in our lives. One person, on losing a job or a special relationship, may feel as if it is the end of the world and go into terrible suffering for months, years, or even a lifetime. Another with the same experience may choose to first experience the sadness, then accept the loss and soon move on to be a powerful creative strength in his life.
In every moment and every situation, you can choose to have fuller, richer life by setting a clear goal to change the victim within, and by inviting into your life the powerful creator that you are.
【小題1】 What does the word “they” in Paragraph 1 probably refer to?
A.People and things around you. | B.Chances and problems. |
C.Creators and their choices. | D.Victims and their sufferings. |
A.Creators have the ability to predict future life. |
B.Creators deal with ups and downs of life wisely. |
C.Victims can influence more people than creators. |
D.Victims and creators face quite different things in life. |
A.strong feelings of sufferings in life pull people into victims. |
B.people need family support to deal with sufferings in life. |
C.it takes creators quite a long time to clear out their pains. |
D.one’s experiences decide his attitude toward his life. |
A.To describe victims and creators. |
B.To compare victims with creators. |
C.To suggest changing from victims to creators. |
D.To explain the relation between victims and creators. |

Now you’ve finished three years of English study. There’s one way to demonstrate(展示) what you’ve learned-take a test!
Do you have any special methods you use to help you do better on a test? How well you do is often a matter of how well prepared you are. Here are some ways to make sure you’re at your best on test days.
Go to bed early. The night before a test is not the time to stay up watching TV. You want to be rested and wide-awake for test day.
Have a good breakfast. Test day isn’t a morning for donuts. Nor is it a time to starve(挨餓) yourself. Eat plenty of low-sugar, high-energy food to keep your brain and body working their best.
Be prepared. Make sure you have two pencils and anything else you were asked to bring.
Watch the numbers. Make sure that the number of the items(項目) on your answer sheet matches the number of the question.
Look over all the answer choices. Don’t assume(假定) that choice A is correct until you’ve checked the others. You may find a better one. And it is wrong to eliminate(排除) any choice that you can see at once. You’ll have a better chance of finding the right answer.
Check the clock. Make sure you allow yourself enough time to answer every question and go back and check your answers. Don’t spend too much time on any difficult question. Skip it and come back to it later.
Keep up with your schoolwork all year long. That’s how you get the skills you need for
taking test.

【小題2】 How many ways are mentioned in this passage?
【小題3】 What should you take to prepare for a test?
【小題4】What do you do if you meet any difficult question?

Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and sweet kisses. So, I really doubted whether there was any love between my parents. Every day they were working hard to pay for my high school. They didn’t act in the romantic ways that I read in books and saw on TV, and they certainly didn’t send flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day (情人節(jié)).
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt (被子). I asked her if there was any love between her and my dad. She stopped and raised her head in surprise. Then she went on with her work without saying anything. I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her feelings. But after a few minutes she said, “Look at this thread (線). Sometimes it appears, but most of the time it disappears in the quilt. If life is a quilt, then love is the thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or at any time, but it’s really there, and makes the quilt long-lasting.” I listened carefully but I didn’t understand her until the next spring.
My mother suddenly got seriously ill and had to stay in hospital for about a month. Every morning and evening after she returned from the hospital, my father helped her walk slowly along our country road. There were many beautiful flowers, green grass and trees, and the sun gently shone through the leaves. All of this made the most beautiful picture in the world. Reading their eyes, I knew they love each other deeply. From this experience, I realized that love is just a thread in the quilt of our lives. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

A.There is beautiful scenery where the writer lived. |
B.There is true love anywhere in the world. |

A.Because her husband didn’t love her. |
B.Because she was thinking of a better answer. |
C.Because she didn’t love her husband. |
D.Because the writer had hurt her feelings. |
A.Love Is Everywhere | B.Love Is Always Romantic |
C.Love: Thread in Quilt | D.Love Can Last Forever |
