Star scientists have taken the first ever picture of a black hole, which is from a far away galaxy (銀河系). It is 40 billion km across-three million times the size of the Earth-and has been described by scientists as "a monster".

The black hole is 500 million trillion km away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes (望遠(yuǎn)鏡) across the world.

Details have come out today in Astrophysical Journal Letters. Prof Heino Falcke, says "It is one of the heaviest black holes that we think there is. It is a real monster."

The picture shows a quite bright "ring of fire", as Prof Falcke describes it. The bright halo is caused by superheated gas fling into the hole. The light is brighter than all the billions of other stars in the galaxy-which is why it can be seen so far away from Earth.

The dark circle at the centre is the point at which the gas enters the black holes, which is an object that has such a large gravitational (萬(wàn)有引力的) pull, not even light can escape.

1The black hole is ________ times the size of the Earth.

A.two millionB.three millionC.six million

2In which part of the newspaper can we read this passage?

A.SportsB.LifestyleC.Science

3The underlined word in paragraph four means ________.

4Which of the following is TURE?

A.The black hole is 500 million km away.

B.This black hole is the heaviest so far.

C.The light from the black hole is the brightest of all the stars.

5From the passage, we can infer that ________.

根據(jù)“It is 40 billion km across-three million times the size of the Earth-and has been described by scientists as "a monster".”

根據(jù)“Star scientists have taken the first ever picture of a black hole, which is from a far away galaxy”可知恒星科學(xué)家們拍攝了第一張黑洞的照片,它來(lái)自一個(gè)遙遠(yuǎn)的星系,可推測(cè)出是科學(xué)板塊,故選C。

根據(jù)“The picture shows a quite bright "ring of fire"”可知這張照片顯示了一個(gè)非常明亮的“火環(huán)”,可推測(cè)出該單詞的意思是“光圈”,故選A

根據(jù)“The black hole is 500 million trillion km away”可知黑洞是5萬(wàn)億億公里,與選項(xiàng)A內(nèi)容相符;根據(jù)“It is one of the heaviest black holes that we think there is.”可知這是我們認(rèn)為存在的最重的黑洞之一,與選項(xiàng)B內(nèi)容不符;根據(jù)“The bright halo is caused by superheated gas fling into the hole. The light is brighter than all the billions of other stars in the galaxy”可知明亮的光暈是由于過(guò)熱的氣體進(jìn)入黑洞造成的,它發(fā)出的光比銀河系中其他數(shù)十億顆恒星發(fā)出的光都要亮,與選項(xiàng)C內(nèi)容不符;故選A

根據(jù)“The black hole is 500 million trillion km away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes (望遠(yuǎn)鏡) across the world.”

Some people think that they have an answer to the problems of automobile crowding and pollution in large cities. Their answer is the bicycle, or bike.
In a great many cities, hundreds of people ride bicycles to work every day. In New York City, some bike riders have even formed a group called “Bike for a Better City”. They claim that if more people rode bicycles to work there would be fewer automobiles in the downtown section of the city and therefore less dirty air from car engines.
For several years this group has been trying to get city government to help bicycle riders. For example, they want the city to paint special lanes—for bicycles only—on some of the main streets, because when bicycle riders must use the same lanes as cars, there may be accidents. “Bike for a Better City” feels that if there were special lanes, more people would use bikes.
But no bicycle lanes have been painted yet. Not everyone thinks it is a good idea. Taxi drivers don't like the idea—they say it will slow traffic. Some store owners on the main streets don't like the idea—they say that if there is less traffic, they will have less business. And most people live too far from downtown to travel by bike.
The city government has not yet decided what to do. It wants to keep everyone happy. On weekends, Central Park—the largest open place in New York—is closed to cars, and the roads may be used by bicycles only. But “Bike for a Better City” says that this is not enough and keeps fighting to get bicycle lanes downtown. Until that happens, the safest place to bicycle may be in the park.

A.cars

A.Special lanes are needed on every street.
B.“Bike for a Better City” members ride bicycles to work.

(3)No bicycle lanes have been painted yet because ______.
A.the city government can't help to paint the lanes
B.the main streets are not wide enough
C.the idea isn't accepted by all
D.there's no need for most people to travel by bike
(4)This passage is mainly about ______.
A.city problems and “Bike for a Better City”
B.“Bike for a Better City” and the city government
C.the government's idea on traffic and city pollution
D.a suggestion on the city problems of traffic and pollution

How do you like your school? Have you ever written to your headmaster to express your idea? Here are some letters written by students from different schools.

Luke, 14, from Jiangsu
I will give some suggestions about our school uniform. In our school, we students have to wear uniform every day. But the yellow and green sports kit (服裝) looks really dark and old. It can't stand for young and lively spirit. We can add some red or orange colors and make a new type of uniform. I hope our headmaster will think about it.

Danny, 14, from Zhejiang
I have two suggestions for my headmaster. First of all, I think we should have more hobby classes in science, such as plane model making class and computer programming class. It is really boring to study basic subjects all the time. And second, I hope we can have more PE lessons or more time for physical exercise. Lots of students now don't have a strong enough body.

Sam, 15, from Shanxi
I'd like to say thank you to my headmaster. About one week ago, I got a bad cold after playing basketball. Our headmaster came to me after he knew about it. He took care of me until my parents came. I really want to thank him for that.

Helen, 14, from Shandong
In the letter I wrote, I want to talk about the possibility of personal classes. Now many middle schools are trying the “personal class" system. Students don't have regular classes. They can choose lessons they want to take. I think it is more effective. And it is also good for exercise. We don't have to stay in one classroom all the time.

(1)Luke gives some suggestions about ______ in his letter.
A.hobby classes
B.personal classes
C.school uniform
D.basketball playing
(2)The reasons why Danny gives two suggestions are that ______.
A.students have too few classes every day and they love sports
B.studying basic subjects only is boring and students are too weak
C.hobby classes are interesting and students have no PE lessons at all
D.students want to cancel the basic subjects and they want to have more sports lessons
(3)According to the passage, most students write to their headmasters about ______.
A.personal experiences
B.how to make schools better
C.spare time activities
D.how to deal with other students
